Update!

Ezra says the item below is based on a story that's basically inaccurate. Well . . . that makes a difference!

Shhh! Don't interrupt our ideological argument with the facts!

While it may be true that Democrats have a grand strategy to run on national security, a large portion of them still seem to be stuck in psudeo-economic populism.

In Friday's WSJ OpEd page, Ken Mehlman and Howard Dean did a point-counterpoint on why their respective parties deserve to win on election day. Mehlman's piece was fairly typical, starting with the English terror plot acting as a reminder that Republicans want to kill terrorists and Democrats want to let them murder your families and pets. I'm not sure if he mentioned the word "economy" once, distracted as I was by the hellish vision of Democrats Ruining the War on Terror. Par for the course, pretty much.

Dean's counter-point, though, was a mess. He opened by pledging that Dems would win the war on terror, but also "the war on the American family." Then he proceeded with 7 or 8 bullet points about why Republicans have wrecked the economy, throwing out percentages and statistics and complaining that Republicans are destroying the middle class.

He waited until his second to last paragraph to even mention national security. The whole of his proposal to make the country safer (and thus, the whole of the national party's proposal) was to pass the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission through Congress.

I really hope that Democrats quickly figure out how lame this "pass the 9/11 Commission plan" sounds. Yes, it was a bipartisan and respected panel. But just saying that they'll pass everything they recommended without talking about any details suggests that most Democrats haven't really read what was proposed, but know its a politically safe thing to say. Worse, it makes the Democrats look content to let some other group of people do the thinking and planning about national security, while the Dems patiently wait for them to finish, and then endorse whatever they come up with.

Thus--Republicans will kill terrorists
Democrats will win the War on America's Families (WOAF?)
