Is Clone-Sex on the Curriculum?

Via Dan Drezner, a fine-grained distinction:

"It's not sexy sex sex, where we're talking about whips and chains, but we will talk about whips and chains," said graduating student Robbie Morgan, 33, who left her job teaching sex education in Chicago to attend the Sexual Diversity Studies program, one of the largest of its kind in North America.

Morgan does, however, allow that "We'll talk about whips and chains in a political, social, cultural, religious context of sexuality and how that sexuality affects those institutions." And there you have it. Admittedly, I took an entire class on Eastern European science fiction (good class, too), so there's a lot of random stuff being taught.

I took a quite good pornography class. Only time I've ever been able to make sense out of the rhetorical thicket that is Judith Butler.

I kept waiting for the local paper to find out and create the requisite scandal, but it never happened.

Damn, I always saw that course in the catalog but never got around to taking it. Who did you read in that class? Stanislaw Lem & the Sturgatsky brothers, I assume, but who else? And which books? I'd love to see the reading list... (I did take a great in-English class in the Slavic department on Nabokov -- but then he wrote half in English anyway.)

The friend of mine who first told me about your blog, years ago, refers to you as Matty Matt Matt. I don't know if this is previously common blogospheric parlance dating to some inside joke I never observed the making of, or idosyncratic to him, but I also tend to refer you to as Matty Matt Matt when it is necessary to distinguish. (Which it sometimes is, out here, what with Mullenweg running around and such. Even though he's Matt #1 again.)Googling it gets some really bizarre hits, like this one in the urban dictionary. In fact, do you even go by Matt? I have no idea.

tomboy, "boys, pirates and capitalists," sounds like a good intro to modern western civ.
