Meandering Aimlessly, Carrying Broken Sticks

More from the aforementioned Bush chat with conservative columnists. Why does the president keep saying this: "I am trying to show success. It will affect Iran. A free Iraq will affect Iran. It will affect Syria."

The administration's been caught in an infinite loop on this question from day one. As everyone can see, it's essentially impossible to accomplish anything in Iraq insofar as the governments of two adjacent countries are actively trying to undermine what we're doing. And yet, the president keeps insisting that one of his long-term goals in Iraq is to overthrow the governments of two of Iraq's neighbors. So -- surprise! -- they try to undermine his policies. And then the administration turns around and whines about it, before deciding down the road that he should once again re-iterate his goal of toppling the regimes. Meanwhile, he has no actual means at his disposal to accomplish this. It's moronic; the kind of thing that it would only take about five minutes of thinking to dissuade you from. But he's been at this for years.

It wasn't that long ago that lots of people would put you down for pointing out that Bush is stupid and ignorant.

Our national press corpse spent years telling us that Gore was a liar (he wasn't), but that Bush wasn't stupid, he wasn't simple-minded, he was resolute and had a clear moral vision (wherein it was OK to tell lies in order to start a war and kill hundreds of thousands, while protecting the rights of the brain-dead and blastocyst-Americans).

Now, across the country, desperate Republicans are airing ads attacking Democratic candidates for wanting to reduce Social Security; does anyone point out the deception? Even Democrats?

Is anyone in this country NOT incredibly stupid?

i can't find where, but i was just reading something about how assad in syria was saying that the conflict and invasion of irag has pacified the resistance to his rule by diverting animosity away from his government and towards the US.

i wonder what bush could say to that?

here's the article looj was talking about, i'm pretty sure:
"In Syria, Iraq's Fate Silences Rights Activists"

Pretty much all the questions and contradictions about Bush disappear when you settle for believing the worst about him. It explains so much.

A simple answer, a la Atrios: because posturing and cheap platitudes have always worked for him in domestic politics, he tries to apply them to all situations.

Watching him, his antics, his utter cluelessness and incompetence, I thought that there might be something nearly Sisyphean in his repetition, pushing the rock of war back up the hill, just to watch it roll back down so he could push it up again.

His guilessness and stupidity would be almost endearing, if, of course, he hadn't slaughtered some 650,000 Iraqis in the process. Rather deadens any endearment and makes me think our goofy Gomer is better pictured as a mean and stupid asshole. Like a bully kid I once knew who used to shoot kids on our block with a BB gun for kicks. That fucker.

So maybe a better comparison point is Corialanus?

The other problem is that if you define "success" as comprising both
- A democratic, Shiite majority Iraq
and
- An Iraq that isn't broadly sympathetic to Iran
then you've pretty much defined success as unachievable from the word go.

BTW, Matt, we're still waiting to hear (from a few threads down) how you define "success" in Afghanistan.

Yep. In particular, though I hate to believe it, I think our Glorious Mesopotamian Adventure owes a lot more to the idiot prince's Freudian conflicts with his old man than anyone wants to admit. It doesn't exactly reflect well on the health of our mangy, shambling "representative government".

Don't you mean: Speak loudly and carry a broken stick?

Posted by: STS on October 28, 2006 02:28 AM

You're forgetting one of the key tenets of the Bush foreign policy, which is that, while invading and occupying Moslem countries makes them become terrorists, if we stopped it would make them become terrorists.

After four years Bush seems to have learned little about the Middle East. Has he read no books on the area; consulted with no experts?
Does he not know, for example, that the idea of a secular civil govenment is alien to much of the region?
