As the single-sex education debate continues, Brad Plumer says the problem is that single-sex education is being pushed by crazed reactionaries, rather than the sort of folks one might expect from my Wellesley-centric view of the situation. Andrew Rotherham says it ain't so, citing e.g., Girls' Prep in New York. Sara Mead says they're both right, positing a distinction between single-sex education and gender-based education, saying the latter is the problem.

Sara Mead writes:
"A cottage industry of education writers and professional development consultants has grown up around helping educators apply brain research to their educational practice. Since we're all obsessed with sex, any research findings about gender differences in the brain are guaranteed to garner national headlines and spark debate. And some of these practitioners, such as Leonard Sax and Michael Gurian, specifically focus on issues of gender differences in the brain in relation to education. The examples Brad offers from Louisiana are based on the kind of notions these guys are peddling about gender differences and their impact on learning.
The problem is, a lot of what they are peddling is crap. They are not neuroscientists and often get the research wrong. It's not that there aren't differences between men's and women's brains. But, as this great American Educator article notes, a lot of "brain research" is really still in its infancy and a long way from being able to provide useful applications for educators."
Only slightly more is known about the human brain than was known a century ago, and you might as well use phrenology or astrology in making policy if you're going to use this stuff.
The fact is that some parents and students prefer single-sex schools for cultural and social reasons, and our public schools were never the melting pots certain people (mostly on the left) claim. American public schools have always been segregated by class and race and ethnicity (there was far more racial and ethnic diversity at the private schools I attended), and single-sex schools are unlikely to undo four decades of political, economic, and cultural enfranchisement of women.
I have no problem with it per se - as I posted on my experience in your other post on this topic - my problem is like a lot of "solutions" regarding education (especially those from the right like uniforms, vouchers, charter schools, etc), I don't think it is the panacea or quick fix that it is touted as being.
"single-sex schools are unlikely to undo four decades of political, economic, and cultural enfranchisement of women"
...unless, of course, we're dealing with reality.
The argument that you can't undo what's been done
1. is not true, and
2. doesn't address the "separate but not equal" elephant in the room.
This society undoes progress all the time. We integrated schools racially. But then we segregated them again by class - when we knew damn well that class lines were almost exactly the same as race lines.
And separate schools are not equal schools. If they were, then rich white urbanites would send their kids to Phelps Career High School with the poor black kids in SE. Nobody would pay to go to Sidwell Friends or St. Albans.
And as it is now, girls still aren't equal. Girls are pushed into fields like mothering, teaching, nursing, and counseling. Boys are pushed into fields like coaching, professoring, doctoring, lawyering, and engineering. Girls are told to excel in elegance and dancing, boys are told to excel in agressiveness and football. Girls should read poetry. Boys should work on cars. Boys wear blue. Girls wear pink. Boys and girls are not equal yet.
And separating them will only make it worse. My Fiance went to public school for the first two years of high school and to a private all girls school for her junior and senior years. When she asked to take Calculus at the mixed-sex public school they told her it was mostly for boys, but let her in. When she tried to take more calculus at the private all-girls school they just didn't offer it.
The opportunity for this differentiation in treatment is all you need to see. Single-sex education could not be done well in the US today. It just can't.
The "single-sex educational debate" is not continuing, except in the rarified atmosphere of those exposed to too much Wellesley and not enough of Father Gropious.
The "debate" is remarkable, chiefly, for the ability of the participants to ignore the voluminous evidence- Catholic and jihad schooling- and focus on the miniscule evidence (if any even exists) to support predictions of a roseate future.
There is nothing that can be achieved by same-sex education that can't be done, with less fuss and spending, by providing more teachers in better classroom environments.
Separate is inherently unequal.
