More War

This sounds incredibly ill-advised to me: "American officials acknowledged that they tacitly supported Ethiopia’s approach because they felt it was the best way to check the growing power of the Islamists, whom American officials have accused of sheltering terrorists tied with Al Qaeda."

There's just no way that a foreign invasion by a Christian army of a Muslim country is going to check the growing power of the Islamists in any meaningful sense. The exact quantity of acreage under Islamists control is no skin off our backs. We need to worry about people plotting against the USA being sheltered somewhere in that acreage. Encouraging Ethiopia to go to war with the Islamists merely encourages them to collaborate in efforts to attack the United States. If the Ethiopian military could somehow eliminate Somali Islamism as a social and political force, that would be one thing, but there's just no way they can do that.

(A) I don't think the word "tacitly" means what Matthew think it means and (2) I am not so certain about what the Ethiopians can and can't do - my understanding is that the Islamists are actually pretty weak and came to power only because the warlords were even weaker.

I don't think "growing power" means what Al thinks it means. Also, when "American officials" are reported in the New York Times as having "acknowledged that they tacitly supported," it means that it's not tacit. It's explicit, just not attributed to a specific Bush official.

The war party doesn't grasp the concept of counterinsurgency -- either in Iraq nor globally.

It's pretty obvious that their dealings with Iraq are a microcosm of the ineptness of the Bush Administration in foreign policy overall. Just with fewer Americans dead from it--so far. We're screwed.

sirs,

let us be cautious about reducing this to a 'muslim vs. christian' affair. recall that

a) ethiopia is demographically half muslim

b) 50:50 eritrea, with a christian president, is supporting the islamists

in an attempt to frame this into a general narrative framework we might be neglecting the local conditions which are more important.

Great. We've started another war.

So I don't understand what we do. Just let the Islamists comfortably settle into power in Somalia? Of course Ethiopia can't smash them completely, but by denying them "acreage" they make it more difficult for them to provide sanctuary for other foreign jihadists. It's my understanding that life is so miserable in Somalia that support will be given to whomever can provide the peace--a familiar theme. So war with Ethiopia will either a) weaken the power of the Islamists and open the possibilty for non-Islamist rule which, if somewhat effective, will absorb the support once held by the Islamists, or b), which unfortunately seems more likely, drive non-Islamist Somalians towards the Islamists, now seen as the legitimate protecors of Muslim Somalia. But I can't see what choice we have: remain neutral? Whatever support we give to Ethiopia must be subtle, but we can't refuse to take sides. Click on the link on my name for more of my thoughts (under "Somalia").

"we can't refuse to take sides."

Um, why not?

Re: a) ethiopia is demographically half muslim

There is really no reliable demographic data on Ethiopia. The best we can say is the the core area of the country is largely Christian, with Muslims being mostly along the Sudanese border to the west and the Somali border areas to the east. In the South there is a considerable African Pagan population.

Why not?
