Redacted Version

Here is the Flynt Leverett op-ed the National Security Council wouldn't permit to see the light of day, complete with redactions. More brackground here. It's clear from reading the thing that this simply isn't an op-ed about classified information. The section where all the redactions are coming from is a brief rundown of US-Iranian relations in the Bush years -- that information's all out there already, it simply isn't very well-known and it's a bit embarrassing to the White House.

does anyone have a print copy of the NYT so they can check whether it was printed that way on the op-ed page?

(my daughter wanted a subscription to a newspaper, a real one, in print. so I thought: well, might as well make it the NYT. then i looked at the price-tag: about $600. a year. forget it. they never should have started giving it away free online.)

It reminds me of The CIA and The Cult of Intelligence by David Wise and someone else -- where they published the book with the redacted sections blacked out.

Given that they included the "x"s under the blackout giving letter counts for the missing words, it seems like someone familiar with these dealings and the citations that contain the missing information could reconstruct the article.

If that happens, submitting it as a reader letter to the NYT editor would be great fun.

Even reading between the lines you see the most schizophrenic, foreign policy team in the history of the United States.

It reads "Old GHWB holdover goes and accomplishes something crucially imporantant, making real and at first glance unlikely alliances and putting a hurt on real enemies". "Bush 41 neo-con hack brought on after making peace with McCain and the Weekly Standard fucks the whole thing up out of arrogance and spite".
