Ah, The Goose

Mona Charen gives us some of that good, principled, serious conservative national security policy analysis: "The President also plans to ask for a larger army – a little late and so necessary! It will be interesting to see how the Democrats in Congress handle that one. All that talk of supporting the troops. . ."

For better or for worse, expanding the end strength of the Army has been a longstanding Democratic Party policy proposal. It was, for example, part of John Kerry platform. Did Charen or anyone else at NRO ever suggest that George W. Bush's longstanding opposition to this idea impugned his patriotism or level of support for our troops?

Would somebody please add me the e-mail distribution list so that I can figure out when we're all supposed to take what the simpletons at the National Review say seriously? Honestly, the response should just be the 2004 "We're Winning" cover, and that's it.

No, no, it's very simple: Anything a Democrat says that supports the troops is simply weasely double-talk to disguise his or her desire to be buggered to death by their brown-skinned, be-turbaned overlords. When a Republican proposes the exact same plan, it's because they love the twin babies America and Jesus and their sincerity should not be questioned.

We're already going much older and less talented in order to fill current recruiting numbers. What would we have to do to make the Army bigger?

This pretty much summarizes the central problem with the conservative movement in the America of 2007: utter slavishness to those in power. Not enough Andrew Sullivans and too much Sean Hannitys.

No.

One more of those Simple Answers to Simple Questions.

Ah today's Republican Party ... always the first in line to take credit for ideas they originally opposed.

Posted by: Jmac on January 10, 2007 02:23 PM

It's not whether you support the troops. It's whether you send them into combat that makes you a patriot or not.

So my question would be: when did just "expanding the ground forces" become an end unto itself?

Is this so we could "do Iraq better"? Given what we know about Iraq, what most people who knew ANYthing about Iraq ALWAYS knew about Iraq but was ignored by the people (and you know who they are) who wanted to "do Iraq", why the hell would we every want to "do" another Iraq? Getting your ass slapped feels so good, you want a bigger ass so you can do it again? WTF?

So, if it isn't to do an "better" Iraq, then, what? Fight the Chinese? Don't make me laugh. MacArthur was the last guy who wanted to fight a land war in Asia. Fight al Qaeda? With more riflemen from Scranton and East LA? Huh?

This issue always gets such a knee-jerk reaction that I'm immediately skeptical. Eric Shinseki warned about trying to run a "12-division foreign policy with a 10-division Army", but I have yet to see the geopolitical and geostrategic analysis that says: ah, there, we need XX number of divisions to accomplish our long-term geopolitical objectives and XX for the short-term, "emergency" requirements. In fact, I haven't seen ANY of this sort of analysis at all. Okay, so we're in the "long war" against Islamic fundamentalism. Where does it say that we need more SAW gunners to fight this war? What kind of "force" (including economic and political "force") might we need to win.

Dammit, this is a red-state stalking horse, and those of us who think we should be fighting Osama smart instead of hard need to see it for what it is.

There is no reason to expand the Army if we are leaving Iraq. The democrats should not be for both.

Posted by: Ben on January 10, 2007 05:58 PM

Ditto to Ben's comment. If we do not leave Iraq, the expansion is much too small to do any good. If we do, then the army will be too large.

Every time you hear the phrase 'I Support the Troops", mentally replace 'support' with 'patronize' and the real meaning will be clarified.

Its like the yellow ribbon campaign. I know most people are sincere but it seems to me like this:

"Here, you go hump baghdad in 140 degree heat, getting blown up by IEDs, shot at by snipers, and Ill sit back here with a yellow ribbon on my car. Deal?"

It reminds me of sports fans who say "WE won the game!".... its laching on to something for personal glory.

Lest we forget, Al Gore called for larger military spending in 2000 as well, Bush (and Clinton) wanted to spend only the mandatory buidget increase. Bush was for the same size military before he was for it.
