It's clear enough that he means "presidential contender" although he never says it. But, even then, that means that Jackson and Sharpton and Mosely-Brown were not "articulate and bright".

I think people are being a wee bit too harsh on Biden. I don't think he was saying that as a reflection on black folk. The *average politician*, of any race, is not "articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy". If you think that most politicians are articulate, or bright, or clean [in the skeletons, closet, etc. sense], or nice-looking, you are seriously deluded. The average *inspiring* politician only has about two of those qualities. I can't think of any recent presidents who had all of those qualities... maybe some people think that Truman was nice-looking? Either way, politicians who have all four of those are pretty damn rare. Oh, and also: mainstream political beliefs! Wow! I understand why you might interpret this as a left-handed compliment, but it certainly isn't a racist sentiment.

-I do not know much about Mosely-Brown, but articulate and bright are not the first adjectives that come to mind when I think of either Sharpton or Jackson. I think of words like Buffon, opportunist, cocaine, shakedown, cowboy hats, exploitation, embarassing.
Besides Cocaine, Obama does not conjure up any of these thoughts. He is an intelligent and well spoken politician who happens to be african american. Leaving Biden's earlier comments on 7-11's and Delaware as a slave state aside, basically all the commentators today -- from Yglesias to Atrios to TPM, and on -- are getting it wrong about what Biden said about Obama. Put the comma in, and it becomes clear that Biden is saying Obama is (a) the first mainstream African-American candidate, and (b) articulate, smart and good looking. Under a proper reading, statement (b) is not only non-controversial, it is downright effusive.
Regarding (a), is it really so controversial to say that Obama is the first mainstream African-American candidate? What does it mean for a candidate to be "mainstream" -- my guess is that for Biden, a long-time player in DC, a Presidential candidate is "mainstream" if she or he has a legitimate chance of winning the general election. Do Jesse Jackson or any other prior African-American candidate meet this definition of "mainstream"? Easily, no.
And, btw, I can leave Biden's earlier gaffes aside because his compliments today about Obama would seem to be the opposite of what a person who harbors racists beliefs about a black opponent would say -- Biden clearly thinks of himself as smart, articulate and good looking, so for him to say the same about Obama was a high compliment indeed!

Final note, I would never vote for Biden in the primaries, not because I think he's a racist, but because he's a weak Senator who was wrong, wrong, wrong on Iraq. Obama and Gore are the only "mainstream" candidates I'm considering.
Having listened to the audio, I can say that it certainly would make sense to add a comma to the transcript, but I can't see that that helps Biden out much, if at all. In the context of discussing an African-American's candidacy, those are loaded, sensitive terms. If Biden is tone-deaf to that -- and tone-deafness is about the most positive spin you can give it -- that raises a real red flag about his judgment.
Maybe it's a failure of imagination on my part, but can you really imagine him having said those things about a candidate who happened to be white?
Live: I think that Biden could have used the exact same words to describe John Edwards -- indeed many others have called Edwards articulate, bright and clean and good looking (some say too squeaky-clean and young looking). As I said previously, I wouldn't vote for Biden anyway, but he's getting a raw deal here.
I wish I could hear the preceding audio. But it's obvious that Biden is talking about Obama's qualities as a presidential candidate and clean probably means not corrupt. He's fairly obviously saying that he thinks Obama is the first black candidate who doesn't scare old white guys in the fly-over states. I don't think that makes Biden a racist.

What's wrong with Obama's response? Politically speaking, he had to do something, but it definitely could have been way harsher than it was. As is he basically dismisses Biden's remarks as insignificant while declaring his solidarity with previous black leaders. I think it's a good and appropriate response.
I still don't understand what Biden is running for President. He has a simply nonexistent chance of winning. That said, it might be a good thing for his considerable ego to deflate a little. Some people are just destined to remain in the Senate forever; it's past time Biden understood that and got back to work.

What's wrong with that (Obama's statement) is that it assumes Biden was contrasting Obama with previous black presidential candidates. If you listen to the audio, that is obviously not what he was doing, except for the term "mainstream." The transcript omitted a necessary comma before the word "who," which changes the meaning significantly.
Here it is with the appropriate comma:
"You got the first mainstream African-American, who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."
Paraphrasing: Not only is Obama the first mainstream African-American presidential candidate, he's also articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.
To make that a racist comment, you'd have to assume that white presidential candidates are without exception articulate and bright and clean and nice-looking.
Biden's comparing Obama to ALL presidential candidates, not to previous African-American presidential candidates.
If Obama hasn't figured that out, he hasn't done his due diligence. If he has figured it out, it's a deliberate smear of Biden.
On the audiotape, Biden makes the remark about the first mainstream African-American candidate and stops. The interviewer says, "Yeah." Then Biden says "Who is articulate" etc. It's clearly two different thoughts, not one continuous thought.

I actually like Hagel quite a lot, but I agree people are too eager to see him as anything other than what he really is: a good, old-fashioned paleo-conservative. Kind of a novelty at this point, and I think this is why people are so blown away by him. He fits that classic mold of someone you could have a heated, energetic argument with but still like afterwards. I'd say "have a beer with afterwards," but considering what Bush has done to that little trope, I won't go anywhere near there.
