Opportunity Costs

I was upset to see that this little girl's SOTU response was slightly more popular than mine but then I actually watched it and it's pretty awesome:

Well said.

She has good common sense. Fashion sense, too. Less prone to digress than Matt.

Her undeniable cuteness is also likely to insulate her somewhat from distasteful insinuations of anti-Semitism. So...how's her spelling?

Posted by: Quarterican on January 24, 2007 10:08 PM

Dang, it's like this video is the poor girl's first introduction to evil in the world. "And ...good night...to you" while she's thinking "oh dear god I have to be nice to my parents or they will feed me to this expensive people hurting machine!"

Posted by: Consumatopia on January 24, 2007 10:14 PM

Matt, I think your videos might be more popular if, instead of the Adidas hoodie you've got your eye on, you considered investing in some cuddly pink-and-green footie pajamas.

Posted by: James Gary on January 24, 2007 10:16 PM

As much as I hate parents who use their kids as political props, I can't deny that the girl is cute and the video is awesome.

Posted by: Reality Man on January 24, 2007 10:45 PM

Her cuteness is overpowering. You can't even begin to compete with her.

Posted by: eriks on January 24, 2007 10:46 PM

That's a pretty cruel thing to do to a defenseless little kid.

Posted by: David J. Balan on January 24, 2007 11:25 PM

Have to agree with Balan: this is pretty gross.

Posted by: ogged on January 24, 2007 11:34 PM

That's a pretty cruel thing to do to a defenseless little kid.

Life, as they say, is a bitch. Kids all have to confront evil at some point--indeed, the war that so terrifies this particular four-year-old has also killed lots of other four-year-olds.

Posted by: dj moonbat on January 24, 2007 11:38 PM

Jesus, what kind of weird quasi-Romantic idea of childhood do Balan & ogged have? Do you really think parents should try to keep their kids from knowing that anyone in the world ever gets hurt until they're, what, 14? More importantly, do you really think you know better than the kid's dad (or whoever the guy is) what kind of conversation is going to somehow cruelly damage her psyche, and what kind she's going to shrug off as he turns off the camera & they run off to play this little piggy before bedtime?

Posted by: Christopher M on January 24, 2007 11:46 PM

"Do you really think parents should try to keep their kids from knowing that anyone in the world ever gets hurt until they're, what, 14?"

Not necessarily. Depends on the subject, I guess.
But an adult *exploiting* the emotional immaturity of a 4 year old in an attempt to drive home his own point seems a little lame, if not cruel, in this context.
And let's face it, she probably would have been more upset if had he told her that she couldn't watch Dora the Explorer for an entire week.

Posted by: oswald on January 25, 2007 12:11 AM

The kid seems to understand so I guess it's probably okay, but to confront a kid with hypotheticals of your parents betraying you for the purpose of pointlessly hurting people still seems disturbing...

...disturbingly adorable!!!! What if I told you that I was waterboarding Santa Clause in the basement? How would you feel about that?

Posted by: Consumatopia on January 25, 2007 12:15 AM

Exposing child to existence of evil -- cruel. Waterboarding her or deporting her parents -- good policy.

I continue to be amazed that I am the same species as Republicans.

Posted by: Kimmitt on January 25, 2007 12:52 AM

For even more cuteness, learn the "original cuppycake song" on youtube, from tiny Amy Castle.

Posted by: ferd on January 25, 2007 01:09 AM

So there was no federal deficit before the Iraq war? The things you learn from the reality based community.

Adorable little girl.

Posted by: Mark Adams on January 25, 2007 01:23 AM

It's a shame she can't read. We could just get her to read Yglesias' blog posts.

That's not fair. We really need Matthew to do one where he gets hauled away by the ADL in the middle.

m, 'it's for your own good!'

Posted by: max on January 25, 2007 01:32 AM

So there was no federal deficit before the Iraq war?

No, but each person in America was thousands of dollars richer before the war. So, yeah--somehow or other, today or tomorrow, that little girl has given up some of her college fund to kill Iraqis. But the important thing is the age at which she is made aware of this fact.

Posted by: dj moonbat on January 25, 2007 01:33 AM

My objection isn't to what the dad discusses with his kid (I'm sure the developmental psychologists have opinions about what's appropriate when), but to using her as a prop to make a point.

Posted by: ogged on January 25, 2007 02:52 AM

Very cute little girl. But I don't think she actually understood as much of that as she seemed to. I mean, do four-year-olds actually understand about "paying back money"?

Posted by: SqueakyRat on January 25, 2007 03:07 AM

Does anyone read Achewood? This kind of reminds me of those Philippe/Liebot "What is the saddest thing?" segments.

http://achewood.com/index.php?date=06022003

for instance.

Posted by: John on January 25, 2007 04:19 AM

Posted by: novakant on January 25, 2007 04:42 AM

I agree with ogged.

Did we learn nothing from Wesley Crusher's travail?

A sad OT...that helicopter shot down 5 days ago in Iraq had three U.S. colonels on board...quite a loss from a command standpoint:

"Really sad and angry." I think I'm putting that on a T-shirt.

Posted by: brooksfoe on January 25, 2007 06:24 AM

"So there was no federal deficit before the Iraq war?"

Good point--let's rephrase that: "There was no federal deficit before the GW Bush adminstration"!

Posted by: rea on January 25, 2007 06:53 AM

Exploitation is exploitation.

Someone poses a highly tendentious, tunnel-visioned choice about the fundamentals of democratic government to a four year old and we're supposed to be bowled over?

Posted by: Bill on January 25, 2007 09:18 AM

Lame. Ogged is right.

Posted by: Joel on January 25, 2007 09:22 AM

This is absurd agitprop. But it is interesting that when the dad asks her how she feels about this money being spent to hurt people, she says that she would feel really bad "if they were people I loved." What if they were people she didn't know?

Posted by: K. Williams on January 25, 2007 10:12 AM

Does anyone read Achewood?

Awesome! I used strip search to find a bunch of saddest things! There's just something about sad kids and sad otters that is so compelling!

Posted by: Consumatopia on January 25, 2007 10:14 AM

What if they were people she didn't know?

Maybe she loves people she doesn't know? She's so cute how could she not love everyone?

Posted by: Consumatopia on January 25, 2007 10:52 AM

How is this any different from parents who use their kids to hold up signs that say "God hates f***" or show aborted fetuses? Wrong is wrong; children shouldn't be exploited. Period.

Posted by: Mario on January 25, 2007 12:32 PM

the "really sad and angry" tells me she's probably been reading (with her parents) one of the books our kids truly love -- "Momma, do you love me?"

Which is to suggest both that book is a likely source of the phrasing, and that children much younger than this girl (my boy's barely two) are very interested in these questions. Certainly they know about sad and angry before they have words to express the ideas. The book is about the consequences of doing bad things, things so bad they stretch the imagination.

Really, though, all this clip does is hammer home that this administration's policies ignore truths that most of us learned before we even got to kindergarten.

Posted by: pi on January 25, 2007 02:30 PM

Wow! Once again I am amazed at the things I learn from the Reality Based Community.

Haha! I love it.

I take this as a lesson in political communication. When dealing with bastards, simplify the message.

Posted by: Trieu Truong on January 28, 2007 11:36 AM

There has been a federal deficit since 1969! We have not come close to a balanced budget. Regan and Bush increased the debt more than any other Presidents, but all have carried a deficit.

Posted by: HistoryGuy on January 28, 2007 04:12 PM

...of course you have to be under the assumption that it is useless, that lots of people getting hurt is not outweighed by any other factor, and that future generations would pay to get people hurt.

Well, I do think it's a little wrong to use a child for politics like this. If we were going to show how innocent kids are, and how we should protect them etc. then this kind of thing is great. But if we're going to try and give our kids a hypothetical situation (that they probably don't even understand) or worse yet, she might be thinking 'Daddy's trying to tell me something, and it doesn't sound nice.' Although she's adorably cute, that doesn't mean she should be used for these kinds of ends.

I personally think it's a little wrong that he has exploited his child to do some political bantering. It's really lame, if you ask me. What, doesn't the guy have enough savvy to write or film a decent post that's convincing? I understand his point, but I think it's lame. She's obviously cute, and that's great. Perhaps, at the end of the day, that's all people will remember – hey, cute kid. What was the point again?
