Strange Ethics

As you can see here there have been some persistent attempts by someone at the Council on Foreign Relations to scrub the Max Boot Wikipedia page of some unflattering information. Boot, of course, is a fellow at CFR and a columnist for The Los Angeles Times. What information? Well, as you can read here on Altercation, what this is about is the fact that Boot is involved in some scandalously corrupt backstory. Before he was a prestigious military policy writer, Boot was simply a generic rightwing hack at The Wall Street Journal's hack-laden editorial page. While there he, among other things, wrote an editorial attacking public health officials that was edited by tobacco lobbyist Steven MIlloy.

The only reason we know anything about this is that it happens to have come up in tobacco-related litigation. It's possible, in principle, that when Boot was writing rightwing regulatory policy journalism for the Journal he just so happened to let one of his pieces be edited by a lobbyist and that that piece just so happened to have come up in a lawsuit. Much more likely, however, is that he did this on various occasions and there just so happens to have been a lawsuit that uncovered this.

And now Boot, or someone working on his behalf, is trying to keep this incident hushed up. I wonder why he's bothering. In case Boot hasn't noticed, he's a conservative. The rules of the media game are clear -- no jobs for the left, no accountability for the right. Corrupt or not, Boot seems like a smart, perceptive guy . . . surely he's picked up on this.

I wouldn't doubt it for second, The CFR adheres to the AIPAC agenda word for word, so I wouldn't doubt that they would pull out all the stops to protect the reputation of one of the agenda's chief propagandists.

I don't know that you can fairly claim that it's "no jobs for the left, no accountability for the right." Unless by "accountable," you mean "given a fellowship at CFR" like Beinart. It seems clear that it's something closer to "no accountability for Our Crowd," and some institutions are just more hooked in than others.

That's what I meant by "no jobs for the left," though. The MSM pundit institutions have created a dynamic where the foreign policy debate runs from Charles Krauthammer to Peter Beinart (in Time) or from Max Boot to Jon Chait (in the LA Times), etc. I think Chait and Beinart are both great columnists, but I think they'd both happily tell you that they're not very far left.

I suppose my outrage is wearing off. Would showing a draft article on global warming to the sierra club or one on NAFTA to the trade attache at the Mexican embassy be wrong? My tentative thought that it's more the unpleasantness of the lobby in question than the fact of showing round a draft which is the problem here.

It's fairly well established that wikipedia is a huge priority for AIPAC and the organization regularly employs it's lackeys to whitewash any Israel related article of any of the less savory aspects of recent jewish history thereby presenting a biased account. This is all but condoned by and with the assistance of wikipedia itself. Every wikipedia article even remotely related to Israel should carry the tag; This is the official AIPAC sanctioned account of events.

No doubt there are many free-agents so to speak who do this on their own. I have no doubt Marty Peretz scowers wikipedia daily editing any Israel articles in attempt to minimize any Israeli culpability in Arab suffering and to paint as monstrous & bloodthirsty a portrait of Arabs as he possibly can.

Dishonest media can drive wads of cash into corrupt hands, who might then kick back. As long as you don't lose viewers, you get the ad revenue PLUS the kickbacks.

There's no extra payoff for honesty. Honest media would tend to drive business toward honest hands, who, apparently, aren't prepared to kick back.

So, let me see if I've got this straight:

right-wing lobbyists were not only actually writing legislation for the Republican majority in the last Congress with a Republican congressman or senator attaching their name to the lobbyist-written legislation, but right-wing lobbyists have been also writing op-eds and editorials for right-wing columnists who've been attaching their name to a piece written by a right-wing lobbyist?

To lend the article credibility? To hide from the public that a right-wing lobbyist hack (in lieu of a newspaper, magazine or broadcast editor) is doing the proofreading and editing (and even generation) of right-wing propaganda articles in the print and broadcast news media?

Sounds to me like certain right-wing columnists (like Boot) might have a wee bit of an attribution problem. They have definitely violated journalistic ethics. I know right-wing columnists and broadcasters get their "talking points" from the RNC and Karl Rove, but having right-wing lobbyists actually write their article without any attribution below the header giving credit to a lobbyist for their "input" goes far beyond a simple ethical lapse.

Henceforth, no right-wing columnist, blogger, broadcaster or whomever, can be trusted to have generated whatever appears under or beside their name. Old-style journalists and columnists took pride in what they individually and independently produced (with their editors providing proofreading and factchecking), but the Republican Party's neo-journalists are nothing more than parrots and puppets for the radical wing of the Republican Party...and can no longer be trusted or believed. No wonder Max Boot is trying to hide the factoid that he is nothing but a Republican hacktoid.

Also, re the AIPAC/antisemitism thing: Criticizing AIPAC, or Israel, isn't antisemitic, but it's alarming how often the criticism shades into real antisemitism. I've noticed that as criticism of Israel gets more heated, the tolerance for intolerance seems to increase. Check the comments on Raw Story some time -- hair raising (but, as ever, only semiliterate).

simdi biz bu siteyi kasarken cinsel sohbet birde sohbet odaları
