Civility

I understand that two wrongs don't make a right, etc., but I wonder if the Dan Gersteins of the world, so concerned about incivility and immaturity among left-wing bloggers, worry at all about the influence of, say, Don Young over the Republican Party:

Young, as you'll recall, is an actual member of congress -- more influential than even Kos! And he's making quotes up! And calling for the murder of Democratic members of congress!

Comments

To be fair, he's only calling for the execution of Democratic members of Congress.

He might also want to look take a look at the entire Washington Times, where Young got his "quote" from. Whenever I see the Washington Times at a newsstand, I always wonder "who reads this crap?" Don Young apparently. (Though, the times I have come out of the DuPont Metro stop when they are giving it away for free, there don't seem to be many Don Young-like people accepting it.)

This is even more frightening than calling John Mu7rtha a cut and run coward on the floor of the House. This guy is dangerous nuts.

Posted by: Jennifer on February 16, 2007 04:00 PM

This guy needs to shun his NAMBLA lifestyle and move to Hawaii. Or someone needs to pack up Fats and ship him over to Kirkuk. Talk about "dead-enders".

Posted by: Trevor on February 16, 2007 04:04 PM

This guy is Alaska's only Congressman?

And they've elected him 18 times in a row?

Posted by: alphie on February 16, 2007 04:15 PM

And there's no move to censure him? No nothing?

Posted by: sniflheim on February 16, 2007 04:33 PM

It's a fake Lincoln quote, as was demonstrated on a number of blogs even before the Congressman's speach.

Of course, Lincoln, who as a Congressman was highly vocal in his opposition to the Mexican War, would have been unlikely to say such a thing.

Posted by: rea on February 16, 2007 04:34 PM

i'll support him fully in his notion that congressmen should be hung for undermining the president in a time of war if he agrees to do it retroactively and start the executions with the people who undermined clinton during somalia and kosovo.

i doubt that anybody would argue there'd be a statute of limitations on something as serious as treason.

let's get this party started.

Plus, that shirt/tie combination is horrific.

Posted by: yoyo on February 16, 2007 05:32 PM

Gernstein. What a punk. Well, now we know the blogosphere has fiinally arrived, as we see it is taking itself far too seriously. But not TOO seriously: Gernstein should find a dentist with better tooth-polish so that his visual image will match his flackiness.

Posted by: DC on February 16, 2007 05:40 PM

A clarification - Don Young's call for hanging Congressmen is a in fact a model of bi-partisanship. He calls for executions of his fellow congressmen from both sides of the aisle.

Posted by: Max Power on February 16, 2007 05:52 PM

You can't have both the southern strategy and Lincoln. Choose one, jerks.

Posted by: Chris on February 16, 2007 06:23 PM

The only thing emboldening the terrorists are his tie and shirt.

I don't know what that means but it sounds right.

"Republicans are dumb."

"This guy is Alaska's only Congressman?"

Why do you ask it that way, alphie? If Alaskans could vote for a second US Representative, don't you think they'd elect someone exactly like Don Young??

Posted by: Grumpy on February 16, 2007 07:39 PM

Above, I should have said,

Instead of worrying about who's emboldening terrorists, Don Young should worry about what's emboldening his shirt.

There that's better.

Also, my unverified Lincoln quote above got me thinking that there may very well be the potential (or even the reality) of a whole underground fake quote industry. First, start out an obscure article in an obscure magazine with a fake quote from someone with instant gravitas, much like the fake Lincoln quote got started. As author, blame editors. As Editor blame host of unknown associate editors. As stupid Republican, use it and then blame obscure magazine if called on it.

I suppose it would be too obvious to just create a single magazine called "He Said What?" that took online orders for quotes but I wouldn't put it past these clowns.

two wrongs don't make a right

Well, it's not exactly like that for me, it's more like this: the lesser of two evils is not a choice I will make in situations when I have other options, in reading matter, listening matter, or political representatives.

The "which one is eviler" thing and the outrage contest thing, i.e., "but where's the outrage about this or that buffoon," are of little interest.

That said, I do have empathy for the more reasonable citizens of Mr. Young's district, as I remember how embarassed I was by Al D'Amato every time he made a statement on the floor. Though I don't know anything about this particular situation, I do know that often times it's pork uber alles, it can buy you a lot of looking the other way on the buffoonery front.

If you throw this into google:

“We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.”

You will come back all Orwell.

It's not Orwell, it's Kipling. There is an Orwell essay about Kipling that uses the quote so it get's sourced back there if at all.

It's not even as hard as you would think, and it's all quite....Orwellian.

I guess ehen Rep. Young reads that the GOP is the "Party of Lincoln," he can be forgiven for thinking that Lincoln was a pea-brained, imperialist, racist, fascist nut.*

Somebody should have stood up and called him out as the cheap facist he is. A man like that doesn't even deserve to let Lincoln's name pass his lips.

Matt understands that "two wrongs don't make a right, etc." I also understand that two wrongs don't make a right, but what's the "etc."? Probably something Matt learned in his fancy Ivy League philosophy studies, but doesn't want to share with the riffraff.

Posted by: Ragout on February 17, 2007 03:46 AM

Don't confuse me with the facts. I'm right because I'm Don Young. Abraham Lincoln said whatever I say that he said. It's about me, what I say, and what I say Abraham Lincoln said, so don't you dare tell me I'm wrong because I'll have you hanged. And I'm right because I'm upset, and because I'm Don Young. From Alaska. And If I want your opinion, which I don't, then I'll ask ya. Asshole democrats, you work for George Bush. Who do you think you work for, the people back home? NO! You work for George Bush, not them people back there where you live. Bastards, I'll hang every one of ya. Cuz I'm Dan Young. From Alaska, meaner'n a grizzly bear, stoopider'n a man oughta be.

The "etc." stands for "three rights make a left". It's part of an Ivy League Driver's Ed. course.

I think he meant to say "I'd like to make [up] a quote..." Who wouldn't?

Posted by: jayhay on February 17, 2007 11:52 AM

Maybe they can have a seance on the Hill to determine what Lincoln said once and for all. I bet Chief Justice Roberts knows how to run a seance?

IOKIYAR, I suppose. And IOKIYACFLID.

Don Young wasn't talking about hanging dissenters during the war in Kosovo! Here's a quote from a press release he put out back in 1999:

Every missile our armed forces launches is another million dollars that won’t be spent on Social Security. The president hasn’t explained his policy or the military’s role for the 21st Century. We have sent our troops to Bosnia to rebuild the country and political system, we have sent our troops to Iraq to punish Saddam, and we have sent our troops to be a referee in Kosovo, without any end game in sight. Where is the national security interest to the U.S?...The president has yet to identify the exit strategy for Kosovo, or for that matter the national importance of conducting air strikes in Kosovo. While I’m very concerned about the president’s Kosovo policy, or lack thereof, I unequivocally support our U.S. troops.
So you see, if you're the Congressman for All Alaska, you can dissent on war policy, but if you're a Democrat dissenting with a Republican president, you can't.

Get it?

And by the way, Alaskans have been TRYING to throw this twit out of office for decades.

Thanks for doing a great job all these years.
