Welcome to Crazytown

A kind of scanned yesterday's article on They Work for Us and missed this sentence:

Working for Us was created in January by a coalition of bloggers, trial lawyers and labor leaders, the trifecta of Democratic interest groups.

Seriously, that's insane. The trifecta of Democratic interest groups?

More to the point, how can you manage to misspell a one-letter word?

It's pretty impressive, innit?

Matt, I've always thought of you as an element of paramutual wagering.

If they added in homosexuals, it would be the fourfecta of Democratic interest groups.

Posted by: Ben on February 22, 2007 02:36 PM

Everyone knows the trifecta is the jews, the gays, and the labor. I would say the media, but they're just a subset of the jews and the gays.

Also covers the bloggers.

I and A aren't even near each other on the keyboard!

Well, didn't the real trifecta used to be blacks, labor, and southern whites? That seems to have broken down, but if bloggers, labor and trial lawyers are really the replacement, I'd say we aren't getting a long-term governing majority anytime soon.

Posted by: Sam L. on February 22, 2007 02:47 PM

Yeah - the Republicans don't have any bloggers...

Mmmmmm.

Well, but surely "the" is simply an Yglesias-like typo: it should read "a trifecta of Democratic interst groups".

Somewhere in the world, Matt's "I" is lurking, displaced by the "A" from the article, which in turned was bumped by a "the" from the gods know where . . .

Do teacher unions fall under labor leaders? See, I kind of think they should be their own pole.

Posted by: Matthew Struhar on February 22, 2007 03:31 PM

Depends. The money comes from Jews, labor, and trial lawyers. (Nobody likes being accused of anti-Semitism, especially in the media.) The votes come from the cities (which include both wealthy whites and Asians and poor minorities, who both vote Democrat and are just about opposite in every other conceivable way). Same way the Republicans get their money from big business and their votes from poor Christians. (Who says you can't serve God and Mammon?)

Posted by: SFG on February 22, 2007 04:35 PM

"and their votes from poor Christians."

That's a pretty pernicious myth. They get their votes from rich and upper middle class people.

Posted by: David Weman on February 22, 2007 05:40 PM

SFG:

Appreciated the "God and Mammon" reference -- I like to call the Republican class bargain the "God and Mammon Coalition." (Slogan: God talk for the poor, bucket loads of cash for the rich.) But I suspect the strongest religiously motivated Republican voters are actually suburbanite evangelicals rather than the poor. Depends on your definitions, of course. To Bush's "haves and have mores" base, everybody else looks "poor".

I just want to register my outrage at the flagrant mis-use of the word "trifecta."

According to Webster's, it's "a bet in which the person betting forecasts the first three finishers in a race in the correct order. • [in sing. ] a run of three wins or grand events : today is a trifecta of birthdays."

Neither of which has relates, beyond to the concept of "threeness," to the sentence at hand. (The writer might've used "ruling triumvirate" or "holy trinity," although those are also conceptually off the mark from what I think he was trying to express.)

Posted by: James Gary on February 23, 2007 08:16 AM

And I just want to register my outrage at the flagrant mis-use of the word "scan." Its original definition was "to examine the particulars or points of minutely; scrutinize." But now it means its antonym: "to glance at or over or read hastily." This pernicious definitional inversion is now afflicting the word peruse. Stop the madness, people!
Also, I think Matt's recent spate of typos is just misplaced nostalgia for his H. Independent days. One of my last articles ran with over five typos in it that were not in my submitted draft. That, my friends, is vintage Indy! But thank Jehovah it wasn't the more "professional" Cringeson, or I probably would have had to give MY a blowjob to get published at all, trading typos for blots on my very soul.

James Gray - Democratic coalitions are no longer allowed to invoke the trinity, holy or otherwise. So command are atheist blogger overlords.
