How on Earth . . .

. . . has the progressive blogosphere not been inundated by posts mocking this absurd Victory Caucus website featuring Hugh Hewitt, Frank Gaffney, and other people who manage the astounding feat of being less credible than Hewitt or Gaffney! They have a blog of course and seem to have been up and running for some time. Recently, Jed Babbin asked the sensible question "what is victory?" in the context of Iraq, which produced a level of huffing and puffing that's simply astounding. It's like classic Steven Den Beste from 2002 except, you know, five years later and on a group blog. I'm impressed. See also this plan for Iran:

Pro ejemplo, we could send China a telegram:
Hi, China. STOP
It’s been awhile. STOP
Hey, last time I was in Bejing I noticed a lot of Audi A6s. STOP
We would like Iran to end activities with regards to Iraq. STOP
We know that you have an interest in Iran. STOP
Because, um, we’re about to drop a nuke on the Iranian oil fields. STOP
Just thought you should know. STOP
Hope the wife and kids are good. STOP
Don’t be a stranger. STOP

Yes. It really says that. Hilariously, the next line is "That process must be combined with a strategy in order to defeat the radical Islamic ideology." The genius behind the strategic masterstroke that is pressuring China to pressure Iran by threatening to nuke Iranian oil fields and thereby raise the price of gasoline (Chinese people being, as is well known, more auto-dependent than Americans) sounds like just the guy to figure this one out.

This gives Doug Feith all the evidence he needs to disprove allegations that he's the Stupidest Fucking Guy on Earth.

Mainly mocking the drop-off in traffic after its much bally-hooed kick-off.

Ummm... considering that quote is what passes for serious thinking, it's not much of a surprise that there are no Upcoming Events listed for VC.

The telegram omits the obvious deal closer:

If you want to stop our master plan STOP

It's going to cost you STOP

That's right STOP

All the tea STOP

Not to mention Sadly, No! and TBogg, where you'd expect to find such snark.

Here's a thought experiment for you all, with respect to China (and India) and the Middle East. Both are rapidly growing, rapidly industrializing, countries, which together have half the world's population. Demand for cars is growing in both countries (China especially).

What if, instead of invading Iraq in 2003, the Bush Administration quietly approached India and China with this proposal: Since Middle Eastern oil is funding extremists, and the largest oil reserves are in Saudi Arabia, we are going to take Saudi oil fields by force. We will then sell this oil to you for half the market rate, and put the proceeds in a trust fund to build hospitals and non-religious schools, etc. in the Islamic world. Seems like it would have been a win for the whole world save a few thousand Saudi "princes".

Hey, gang! Here's a thought experiment. Lets say we all get together, kill Ian, enslave his family, and redistribute his belongings for ourselves. Sounds like everyone wins, except some obnoxious "troll".

Hmmm. I'm on the fence on this one: can I piss on his grave?

I'm in, Sam, and call dibs on his tiny, tiny brain.

That process must be combined with a strategy in order to defeat the radical Islamic ideology.

Sounds great, but then we'll need a strategy to defeat the radical American ideology of nuclear tyranny that rises from the ashes.

Posted by: neil on March 26, 2007 05:54 PM

I know it may be tiny, but I've been told it has a nougat centre, so... sharesies on the Ian brain, people.

How do you view the responses to "what is victory"? I don't see a comment link or what have you.

thanks.

Posted by: Sam Spade on March 26, 2007 05:56 PM

Maybe if Westerners stopped indiscriminately killing Muslims, taking their resources, and interfering in their governments, they might stop radicalizing at such an alarming rate.

Just a thought.

That process must be combined with a strategy in order to defeat the radical Islamic ideology.

This is kind of like that "guide to building a nuclear bomb" that begins, "first, get your hands on some weapons-grade processed uranium...."

Ugh, I'm a regular on Metafilter.com and recently Steven C. Den Beste has cropped back up after shutting down his blog and posting all kinds of crap. He manages to be wrong about the most basic things.

How about the problems of 1) we would be selling that to two countries that imperialistically hold Muslim lands despite the wishes of the people (Kashmiris and Uyghurs) and 2) colonial ventures, no matter how high-minded, have to be carried out by imperfect human beings full of greed from nations with their own strategic interests? 1 = more angry Muslims. We might as well just sell that oil to Russia and Israel at below-market rates just to be an ass. 2 = shooting ourselves in the foot. Would you trust someone relatively competent that shares many of your values, such as the Brazilians, to control our oil companies, fields, supplies, shipment lines, revenues and profit distribution? I doubt it. Would you trust the Chinese or the Russians to do that? I doubt that even more. Why would Arab Muslims trust us to do so?

Why is the only commodity on earth that conservatives want to collective Middle East oil?

Posted by: Ed Marshall on March 26, 2007 09:09 PM

Ben, I disagree. The rest should read:
If you want to stop our master plan STOP

One STOP

miiillliooon STOP

Certainly with over a billion people China MUST have the majority of Audi A6s.

Posted by: theCoach on March 26, 2007 10:24 PM

Is China more auto-dependent than the US? As an American living in China I find this quite doubtful. It's no secret that China's demand for oil is increasing, but last I checked there were fewer cars on the road here than in the US. Remember, a majority of Chinese citizens are simply too poor to have cars.

But the gist of your point remains.

Er, Matt S - Matt Y may have been deploying irony there. Or he may believe that China has leapt from Mao Jackets to 2.5 SUVs per person in less than a generation. It's so confusing!

I believe it is a fundamental question of philosophy, no?

If supreme idiocy falls in the woods and there's no one there to here it, will it be satirized?
