Shed a Single Tear

Jonah Goldberg says his much-mocked book Liberal Fascism: The Totalitarian Temptation from Mussolini to Hillary Clinton is being misunderstood: " book isn't like Dinesh's latest book. It isn't like any Ann Coulter book. It isn't what the Amazon description says or what the Economist claims it is. Or what Frank Rich imagines it is," he writes, "It is a very serious, thoughtful, argument that has never been made in such detail or with such care." And I'm sure it is. They probably got a dozen men to hold him down, while another pointed a gun at his head and said "look Goldberg, I know you're doing seriously scholarship here, but you've just got to use that subtitle. We're liberals, after all, not afraid to use a little castor oil to get our way."

"It isn't what the title says it is, either"?

Castor oil in large amounts will cause kidney damage. (Any overdose of a laxative will do this.) The castored subject walks away, gingerly, from his poisoners and in a week or so, dead, without a mark on him.

It isn't torture so much as it's murder.

Posted by: Jeffrey Davis on March 22, 2007 09:16 AM

What's next: Jonah's "serious, thoughtful" explanations?

"The publisher chose the title"
"The editor chose the title"
"The marketing department chose the title"
"My agent chose the title"
"They picked the title at random out of a hat"

Appended with that now-classic explication of contemporary conservative philosophy:

" Ihad nothing to do with it. It's not my fault."

Posted by: Jay C on March 22, 2007 09:19 AM

I wonder if we've gotten to the beyond-self-parody point with Jonah, yet. After all, would any actual scholar, like, say, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., who was "too little the scholar" for Goldberg, or Juan Cole, who possesses inferior judgment (according to Jonah at least), defend their latest opus with the pathetic averral that it is "a very serious, thoughtful, argument that has never been made with such detail or such care" ? Isn't this homme dlettres (whose sense of historical thinking extends to lame Star Trek and cartoon analogies) being a tad brittle and defensive with this fact-free assertion?

Goldberg has long since jumped the shark.

Posted by: Ben Cronin on March 22, 2007 09:21 AM

I have a question that I really do not know the answer to - Is Jonah Goldberg only in his position because his mother was involved in the Lewinsky dust up?

The question is, would Jonah be where he is without that connection? Was he already an up and comer?

Posted by: theCoach on March 22, 2007 09:24 AM

Don't forget, folks. Comparing Bush to any authoritarian is the hallmark of unseriousness.

Posted by: Bill on March 22, 2007 09:25 AM

Soooo....

Barack Obama (sorry - a person who works for a firm tied to Obama) saying Hillary is totalitarian = good
Jonah Goldberg saying Hillary is totalitarian = bad.

Got it!

I guess I missed the part where the YouTube guy claimed his ad represented a "serious, thoughtful argument." Otherwise, really great comparison, Al.

There we have the monster, Al, being monstrous.

That is some truly world class hackery right there.

Posted by: Scott Lemieux on March 22, 2007 10:10 AM

Goldberg's book definitely falls under the "Ramesh Ponnuru Inflammatory Book Titles Rule", wherein you can't expect the other side to take your book seriously when you use a phrase specifically meant to anger them in your title. This probably applies to Jimmy Carter's latest book as well.

Posted by: Cain on March 22, 2007 10:10 AM

You're right, you're right. Matthew actually said people should be "somewhat careful" about calling Hillary a dictator. Being "somewhat" careful about that isn't the same as it being good. My mistake.

Man Behind the Clinton Clip Worked for Obama's Net Strategists

I think I missed the part where he called Hillary Clinton a "totalitarian".

Man Behind the Clinton Clip Worked for Obama's Net Strategists

Yeah, his "net strategists" who don't actually do any strategy work for the campaign. And they fired the guy when they found out he made the clip. Clearly, we've all but caught Obama with the bloody knife in his hand.

It's always hard to tell if Al is just trolling for fun. Could he seriously be gullible enough to believe that Obama's campaign orchestrated this behind the scenes, with the intention of keeping the connection secret, and proceeded to put a link to Obama's website at the end of the video? I doubt it, but you never know. He seems to disengage his critical thinking skills when there's something that might make a Democrat look bad.

Posted by: Steve on March 22, 2007 10:34 AM

Al claims to be an American, but apparently he has no knowledge of American cultural markers, what they mean and when they are being parodied. His politics also read like a self-proclaimed anarchist who never looked up the meaning of the word "anarchy."

Posted by: M. Duss on March 22, 2007 11:09 AM

Funny how the talking point of choice is that it's not so terrible to bring up Hillary Clinton in connection with fascism, when obviously the most offensive thing about the title is that it lumps Hillary in the same category with Mussolini. I suppose that a book which talks about the evolution of an ideology "From Hitler to Bush" would be given a serious, thoughtful treatment by Al and his friends.

Posted by: Steve on March 22, 2007 11:12 AM

Steve, I think this is the way these things usually go. Some (scare quotes) "outside" group or person, having all kinds of ties to the campaign, creates some controversial ad. The ad gets lots of play, including from the free media. The target denounces the ad and calls the ad's sponsor/creator a front for the campaign to which it has ties. That campaign says it has nothing to do with the ad, and meybe even (scare quote) "denounces" the ad. Hilarity ensues.

I mean, that's the way it went down with the Swift Boats, right? This seems to be on a somewhat similar pattern.

Castor seed is the source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses. The seeds contain between 40% and 60% oil that is rich in triglycerides, mainly ricinolein. They also contain ricin, a poison, which is also present in lower concentrations throughout the plant.

Now you're just amazing me. You're seriously contending that the plan was to make this appear like something distinct from the Obama campaign when it wasn't, and the way they pulled this off was... including a link to the Obama campaign website in the video?

If you seriously can't see that a rogue individual is the most likely explanation for this ad, then you're beyond hope.

This is the same shtick Ramesh Ponnuru used about his ridiculous Party of Death book. "No, no, ignore the cover, and the title, and the blurbs -- I'm not responsible for any of that, and it has nothing to do with what the book's about." Amazing that right-wing publishers are going out of their way to make their authors look bad over their strong protestations.

AL,

Thanks for the bait, this is fun. There's a difference between a tongue-in-cheek ad and a book length polemic, isn't there? I mean, when Apple ran the commercial in its original, non-parody form, they weren't claiming that IBM was literally a fascist movement. They were saying that the IBM PC was *boring*. From my humble vantage point, it seems like a clear difference. But your mileage may vary!

When you show me evidence that the YouTube ad was financed by massive donations from major Obama contributors, I'll admit you have a sort of analogy. Will you ever admit that you don't have much of one?

You're playing a really annoying game here, where you take no position on whether the Swift Boat guys were or weren't in bed with the Bush/Cheney campaign, but because I "must" believe that they were, you think I'm somehow forced to admit that Obama must be secretly behind the YouTube ad because it's the exact same set of facts.

Tell you what, how about you actually take a position on what you believe to be true instead of just trolling, and maybe we can have a discussion.

MY - your cinematic education is not complete until you have seen Felini's AMARCORD (winner, best foreign film, 1974) - semi-autobiographical film that takes place in a small village in Italy in the '30s. In the movie, the father is suspected of anti-Fascist sympathies and is given the castor oil treatment. Many of Felini's movies are weird, weird, weird, but AMARCORD is definitely his most approachable.

Jonah's mother was a skank long before Lewinsky. She was a dirty trickster for Republicans as a younger woman. Unfortunately her baby got on TV during the Lewinsky affair and he tried to make it sound like he knew what he was talking about. Just like now. He still has mommy's apron strrings close in case the LA Times wakes up and realizes what an @$ he is. It's amazing such a twit was hired in the first place. I guess that falls on the editors of the LA Times.

I am a librul-cala-fascistic-expialadocious kind of a guy.Have been for years.I don`t post much, but I just cannot restrain myself any more.I had to tell someone after all these years of pent up emotional confusion.
I have a question about Mr. Goldberg`s book title.I may show how dumb I actually am,but I thought that being librul was kind of the opposite of being fascist.I always thought that us libruls were supposed to be "left wing commie pinkos,"and over the years I`ve learned to carry that shameful stigma--sometimes proudly,I might add.
Now,I find out that my librulaty is really fascism.I`m very confused. What should I do?

Posted by: Sully18 on March 22, 2007 05:10 PM

I can understand the Right trying to hide their unbreakable link to Fascism (it is defined as a movement of the Right working in concert with industry and having a strong component of nationalism) but I'm baffled as to how they try to lay it on the Left. It's a bit like calling folks on the Right "Communists", it doesn't work no matter how one wants to tar the other side with "names". How do they get media people to repeat this nonsense?

Posted by: That American Chap on March 22, 2007 06:56 PM

The problem you are having is caused by your understanding of the meaning of words you employ. Conservatives do not limit themselves in this way. Essentially, words are used solely for their ability to (i) frighten, (ii) confuse, or (iii) anger. Thus, "fascist" has no actual meaning, it is a mere epithet, a scary and un-american sounding thing for tarring, and silencing, those who disagree.
