The Real Rudy

Back in 1993, Rudy Giuliani plays the family card, deploying Donna Hanover's love and affection for him and his legendary skills as a father for political gain:

Nowadays, of course, young Andrew Giuliani is a bit older and not on speaking terms with his father. The source of the fight seems to be that Rudy not only divorced Andrew's mother, but insisted on publicly humiliating her in that uniquely classy Giuliani way. Mitt Romney, famously, is the only practicing monogamist among the Three Stooges.

I keep seeing references to this "public humiliation" business, but what was the deal? Was it just the public consorting with the mistress, or something yet more abusive?

He is also using hair to political advantage -- now, not so much.

Andrew stressed he still loves his father and said "we are both working on our relationship,"

Sounds like, technically, they are on "speaking terms." Hard to work on your relationship without speaking. But yes, he sounds like a pretty crappy father.

That is beautiful. Hell, his opponents could just run that as an attack ad.

I think Steve M at No More Mister Nice Blog is absolutely right that Giuliani is the real threat from the Republican side. The more stuff like this we can deploy against him, the better.

Also, I read somewhere that he's dating Sarah Hughes the figure skater. Andrew, I mean, not Rudy - I guess one needs to be clear about these things.

"I keep seeing references to this "public humiliation" business, but what was the deal? Was it just the public consorting with the mistress, or something yet more abusive?"

Guiliani announced to the press that he was ending the marriage before he told Hanover. She learned of his decision by watching the press conference.

Dj, the "public humiliation" reference refers to the sensitive way that Rudy informed Donna Hanover that he had decided to divorce her. Instead of telling her personally, he announced his plans to divorce her at a press conference.

Classy all the way!

I also read somewhere that Donna Hanover had a restraining order to keep Rudy from bringing his mistress into her and their son's house. I didn't see a link to a news source, though. Could that be true?

On the hand, I think I read that Hanover starred in the play "The Vagina Monologues". If that's true, the wingnuts will probably give Rudy a medal for his behavior.

There's more to it than just the press conference. This May '01 Time column provides a pretty good overview.

Whenever he visited the kids at Hanover's house, he would bring Judith Nathan with him. When Hanover asked a court to put a stop to this, he had his lawyer trash her in the press on Mother's Day.

This whole "only practicing monogomist" bit seems insincere. Are young urban lefty types really anti-divorce now? Have McCain and Giuliani rendered themselves hypocrites by trying to ban divorce or something?

Wow. That is off the charts.

It's a Mormon joke.

Ha! Ha! All this family crap is fun, and it sure feels like we're sharing a special secret about the candidate.

The issue with Guiliani is not his divorce, which should be private, but his failure to keep it private. Announcing to your wife that you are ending the marriage at a press conference and having your attorney trash the mother of your children in the press on Mother's Day were both extremely tawdry.

I would never consider voting for Guiliani for an entirely different reason, his absolute inability to work constructively with anyone who does not buy into his agenda 100%.

It is true, with the addition that "her and their son's house" was Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of NY.

It's funny that you're all so concerned about family values with Rudy. Presumably, all of you vehemently defended Clinton, despite his propensity to get a beejer from an intern in his office and then lie to his wife (and the nation) about it. Is that treating Hillary any classier than Giules treated his wife?

Posted by: concern troll on March 8, 2007 03:35 PM

Presumably, all of you vehemently defended Clinton...

You mean you presume this, absent any evidence.

Posted by: dj moonbat on March 8, 2007 03:38 PM

You know Andrew Giuliani is legitimately a high functioning retard, don't you?

Posted by: guy on March 8, 2007 03:42 PM

Q: Is that treating Hillary any classier than Giules treated his wife?

A: Yes.

Posted by: Jim W on March 8, 2007 04:04 PM

"You know Andrew Giuliani is legitimately a high functioning retard, don't you?"

A student at Duke University? Surely not!

Admittedly, he's a student-athlete at Duke, and some of them have done some awfully dumb things lately, but still . . .

"Is that treating Hillary any classier than Giules treated his wife?"

Without defending Clinton's behavior--yes, what Guiliani did to his wife and family was much worse. Clinton, you may recall, tried to avoid public embarrassing scenes, although unsuccessfully--Guiliani embraced them, in order to strike a blow at his then-wife.

Posted by: rea on March 8, 2007 04:11 PM

Duke or no, I don't really know a polite way to put it other than that he's actually "mentally challenged"—not slow, not dumb.

Proper silly anti-Giuliani spin would involve him being cruel to his retarded son.

Posted by: guy on March 8, 2007 04:20 PM

So Matthew... you believe that the spectable of Giuliani publically humiliating his outspoken, career-minded (now-ex-)wife will somehow hurt his chances with "values voters", male or otherwise?

Ah, the naivete of youth.

Posted by: Doctor Memory on March 8, 2007 05:20 PM

It might seriously hamper his standing with many women though. Trying to cover up an affair and keep it out of the public is understandable (although the affair is wrong) but I can't imagine many women who wouldn't SERIOUSLY cringe when hearing how he announced the divorce to his wife. It just won't play well to women.

There is a distinction to be made between the Giuliani and Clinton infidelities: Clintion was subject to a massive investigative effort that cost taxpayers millions of dollars to uncover his infidelities and Rudy Giuliani was not. Rudy anounced his divorce and then proceeded to debase his wife in the press. He made his fight public while Clinton got in trouble trying to keep his ill-advised private life, private.

Bill was just as unfaithful but not nearly as indiscreet and mean spirited as Rudy.
