Unity '08 Revisited

I haven't written much about Unity '08 since my classic 6/6/06 column on the subject, but Brendan Nyhan checks back in and finds it -- predictably -- falling flat on its face. The good news for them, however, is that they're only 4,965,000 delegates short of their minimum goals.

So, I'm guessing that Broder et al will just split the difference and endorse the Republican candidate.

Now, now. It's possible that the Republicans will nominate someone so wingnutty and vile that Broder and the other Wise Men of the Beltway will be forced to endorse the Democratic candidate - but that endorsement will be filled with so many caveats, recitations of the candidate's flaws (true or not), long passages wishing they had someone (anyone!) else they could endorse, and general bellyaching, that they overall effect will be more harmful than helpful to the candidate.

See: TNR's endorsement of Kerry in 2004.

Maybe they'll opt for the Richard Cohen approach of endorsing the Democrat but then endorsing the Republican after the latter gets the election handed to him by a lawless Supreme Court.
