A Winning Ticket

The Wizards' season may be -- well, okay, definitely is -- de facto over, but the good people at Wizznutzz are still working away to produce this line of quality t-shirts, expressing a sentiment clearly aimed at my very own heart.

This attempt at ticket balancing does, however, raise the question of whether Gilbert Arenas' Black President MySpace page is authentic. When I first say it late last summer, my inclination was to believe. Now that Arenas has emerged as much more of a media star, I have to say that I don't find it credible that he's really that eccentric. But who knows? The world is a funner place if we think of it as authentic so perhaps I should choose to do so.

Edwards/Bubbachuck '08!

I think the Answer would sort of undercut Edwards' clean cut southern boy appeal. Edwards and Luke Walton!

"I think the Answer would sort of undercut Edwards' clean cut southern boy appeal."

It's called balancing the ticket.

And besides, Iverson's ability to draw contact would force McCain to pick up two fouls early in the first quarter, forcing him to a lengthy stay on the bench. You can't campaign if you're stuck sitting on the bench.

Everyone knows McCain doesn't have the foot speed to stay in front of Iverson. I would've thought that was obvious.

McCain gets a veep, too, right?

Posted by: Matthew Yglesias on April 19, 2007 10:18 AM

In the spirit of nitpicking, you people are aware that the VP must be 35 years old, right? What you are looking at is something like Obama/Clifford Robinson '08.

Posted by: Al on April 19, 2007 10:25 AM

"McCain gets a veep, too, right?"

If McCain picks a guard as his VP, say Tim Hardaway, that would mean that McCain would have to defend Edwards in the frontcourt.

And given that McCain can't lift his arms over his head, I think that would result in Edwards scoring at will.

Basically, an Edwards/Bubbachuck ticket would be a pick your poison situation.

Posted by: Petey on April 19, 2007 10:26 AM

I would totally vote for Uncle Cliffie. Especially if the campaign song was "Legalize It."

Posted by: SomeCallMeTim on April 19, 2007 10:35 AM

And given that McCain can't lift his arms over his head, I think that would result in Edwards scoring at will.

In general, McCain's probably not much of a threat on the court (nor Fred Thompson, for that matter). I'm not sure Edwards can counter Giuliani's athleticism.

Posted by: Matthew Yglesias on April 19, 2007 11:06 AM

Personally, I'd prefer Edwards in the backcourt. Raymond Felton can attest to the sweetness of his mid-range shooting.

You're missing the part of the story where they say there was no dunking and no three point shooting, re-enforcing my worries about Edwards' lack of athleticism. He strikes me, frankly, as an Adam Morrison type of player, dominant at the NCAA level, but necessarily well-suited to the pro game. Note as well that he's from North Carolina, the home of second-rate basketball.

Contrast all this with Obama's length, athleticism, and tremendous upside potential.

"McCain's probably not much of a threat on the court"

Meh. Shawn Marion also can't lift his arms over his head, but he still manages to get off a weirdly accurate shot launched from his chest.

Don't underestimate McCain on the perimeter, hence the need for a Dem VP who can get him in early foul trouble.

(I'm always amazed that ABC so rarely runs features on Marion's time as a POW. It would serve to humanize him for the casual sports fan audience, as well as satisfying Marion's desire for more time in the spotlight.)

And as to Giuliani's athleticism, what on earth does athleticism have to do with vote getting? You don't see Dwight Howard running for President, do you?

Posted by: Petey on April 19, 2007 11:39 AM

I note also that Obama's got coaching in the family. More on Obama's game:

Craig Robinson believes you can tell a lot about a guy by how he plays basketball, which is why he liked Barack Obama long before the Democrat decided to run for president.
Recalling a pickup game the two played in Chicago some 15 years ago when they were first getting to know each other, Robinson remembers that Obama was confident in his game without being arrogant. He took shots when he was open, but wasn't overly selfish. And he didn't show off his Harvard Law School pedigree.

Non-selfish. No wonder Bubbachuck-lover Petey is not a fan!

Posted by: Al on April 19, 2007 11:39 AM

If you have to be 35, then might I suggest Obama/Greg Oden?

Posted by: norbizness on April 19, 2007 11:47 AM

"He strikes me, frankly, as an Adam Morrison type of player, dominant at the NCAA level, but necessarily well-suited to the pro game ... Contrast all this with Obama's length, athleticism, and tremendous upside potential."

Of course, given Obama's likely general election problems with defense, I'd say he's the more apt Adam Morrison comparison.

(Though that's not entirely fair. I think Obama has a more polished offensive game than Morrison. Perhaps Kyle Korver or Eddy Curry are better comparisons for Obama.)

Edwards has a good deal of Dirk to his game. What he's doing doesn't seem all that difficult, but you simply can't stop him from getting shots from his comfort zone.

"Non-selfish. No wonder Bubbachuck-lover Petey is not a fan!"

I am an Obama fan. But think of it this way: I'm a big Gilbert fan, but I'd still choose Kobe first at the playground if we were choosing teams. Being a fan doesn't require being stupid.

And "selfish" Bubbachuck was 8th in the league in assists this year...

Damnit, Petey, I'm trying to talk about the presidential candidates' basketball skills, not talk about their political skills through the use of basketball metaphors.

So to return to the point: Edwards lacks athleticism.

How do we like Edwards/Clinton/Obama's chances in a game of three on three against Romney/McCain/Giuliani?

Posted by: Matthew Yglesias on April 19, 2007 11:58 AM

Reminiscent of item 15 of this McSweeneys from 2004.

The obvious choice from the over-35 set is Charles Barkley, but I guess he might be too much of a loose cannon. Is Kenny Smith a Democrat?

I believe Edwards started on his high school football team so there's some athleticism there, and I would think he'd have to have at least some basketball skills, being from NC.

Home of second rate basketball?

For what it's worth, according to IMDB, Obama has two-and-a-half inches on Edwards and five inches on Clinton (who's taller than I expected - only a half-inch shorter than Sue Bird, by way of comparison). Bill Richardson is reputed to be very tall, but I'm having trouble finding an exact figure on Google.

Posted by: JP on April 19, 2007 12:38 PM

Bill Bradley.

Posted by: JM on April 19, 2007 12:39 PM

"Bill Richardson is reputed to be very tall, but I'm having trouble finding an exact figure on Google."

The DNC scouting combine measured him 6' 11", but rumors are that he's actually an inch or two taller.

Posted by: Petey on April 19, 2007 12:43 PM

Is that with or without shoes?

Posted by: JP on April 19, 2007 01:28 PM

"Is that with or without shoes?"

Richardson never wears shoes. For formal occasions, they just paint his feet to create the illusion of wing tips.

It's one the reasons he doesn't play in the NBA despite his height.

I actually think norbizness wins the thread.

pride of the windy city. and an unbeatable ticket.
