Thanks to Ezra Klein, here's some video of David Brooks' mature, serious candidate singing a little ditty about bombing Iran:
I would also note that the questioner's premise -- that Iran is "blowing up people" -- is factually mistaken. A mature, responsible politician would have pointed that out. McCain, however, is a different sort of politician. Isaac Chotiner remarks, "If you think McCain is old and crazy now, just wait until his second term!"

I am becoming rather depressed about the likelihood of US war with Iran. There are too many people who want it, and not enough people who don't.
Note one of the tropes of warmongering, as evidenced by Eli Lake in a recent bloggingheads episode: on the one hand, claim that we are already in a sort-of-war with Iran, and on the other hand say that we're not going in fact invade them, in other words both ramping up the war-like status now, and ramping down the war-like status existing after a missile attack, so as to normalise/minimalise the fact that we would in fact making a massively significant decision by entering into a war with Iran.
Wasn't that a Steve Dahl schtick back in 1980 or so?
" '... old and crazy ...' "
And sickly. Old, crazy and sick. The man is not healthy.
Here's a tip, Yglasias. This could make a good series of blog posts.
You remember all the talk about Bush's "dog-whistle" appeals to mainly Southern cultural conservatives? He used code-words to hint to Southern whackjobs that he was one of them, but they were subtle enough not to arouse suspicion in sane people.
I think McCain is dog-whistling to sane people, hinting at them (us?) that he's not as crazy as he believes he must act to win the primaries. He jokes more-or-less openly about this on his bus from time to time.
Can we be sure this isn't a dog-whistle - i.e., that he's actually making fun of the moonbat bombers of the right with this little song? Seems plausible to me.
McCain may be slandering the Beach Boys. It seems 'Bomb Iran' was someone else's parody of their song, 'Barbara Ann'.
We really need to know what McCain said after this to know whether his response was objectionable. I think he's a nutcase, but this video doesn't show it--the song bit was a pretty good summary of the guy's question, and it might have been slightly mocking--again, depending on what came next.
A guy goes off the deep end and kills 31 people on a college campus. We are all collectively saddened and outraged. We also concede he was likely batshit crazy, not that that is an excuse or lessens the pain or anger. Now, Bush goes off the deep end and gets over 3000 Americans killed in an ill advised, preemptive and undeclared war. Tens if not hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraq civilians also die. Where's the 24/7 coverage over Bush's insanity and murder? Somebody needs to leave a pistol on his desk and tell him they're leaving the room and expect him to do the decent thing.
"Somebody needs to leave a pistol on his desk and tell him they're leaving the room and expect him to do the decent thing."
Except, bonehead that he is, Bush would probably think he's supposed to go on a homicidal rampage.
"Barbara Ann" was originally performed by the Regents in 1961. The Beach Boys were covering it.
And yes, I remember hearing this shtick on the radio in 1980. I'd need a lot of context to conclude that McCain isn't being a schmuck, though.
i'm with ogged -- the video is pointless if we don't know how he answered the question. would love to see a transcript (or video) with his answer.
Unless McCain's next sentence was "And I totally disagree with the premise of that shameful song parody," I don't see how context saves him.
Having said that, I think Reagan's "legislation to outlaw Russia" joke was actually sort of funny.
What's terrifying is that the questioner gets applause from the audience.
Yeah, I'm thinking McCain is helpfully paraphrasing the question in the form of a song.
Nothing objectionable here.
A little more here:
http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=18230309&BRD=2081&PAG=461&dept_id=385210&rfi=6
McCain began his answer by changing the words to a popular Beach Boys song.
“Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” he sang to the tune of Barbara Ann. “Iran is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. That alone should concern us but now they are trying for nuclear capabilities. I totally support the President when he says we will not allow Iran to destroy Israel.”
He stopped short of answering the actual question and did not say if he supports an invasion of Iran.
> It seems 'Bomb Iran' was someone else's parody
> of their song, 'Barbara Ann'.
That would be Steve Dahl, 1970s/80s shock jock of Chicago FM radio, and his band The Insane Coho Lips during the Iranian hostage period.
Cranky
What did he say after that? I hope it was, "That's a joke. Obviously we can't so that."
Check this out Matt. http://americanfootprints.com/drupal/
War with Iran is just a neocon / neoliberal sinister plan, based upon propaganda. REAL conservatives do not support it, which is why I signed the Conservative Exodus Project.

/
Last polls I saw showed that a majority of conservative/Republican Americans are against war with Iran. Public support overall stands at like 5-15%. The problem is, those people who want the war all seem to live in Washington or work for the media.
Re otto
What's this, Senator McCain doesn't think it would be a good idea to allow Iran to destroy the State of Israel. How gauche of him! Apparently, Mr. otto thinks it would be a good idea.
SLC:
Apparently, Mr. otto thinks it would be a good idea.
Actually, Otto just quoted from the article he linked without adding any thought of his own.
Mr. SLC gets an 'F' in reading comprehension.

Jeebus, the Conservative Exodus Project is some kind of lunatic white-supremacist thing and it's still better than the mainstream GOP.
Re David Tomlin
I'm afraid that the implication in Mr. ottos' comment is that he disagrees with Senator McCains' comment. This, of course takes into consideration Mr. ottos' previous Israel bashing proclivities.
This is a slander of the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson may be crazy, but he's not that crazy.
Re Yglesias
It should be pointed out that the Chotiner article refers to the Drudge blog. Hardly a source that a liberal like Mr. Yglesias should be considering as reliable. Matt Drudge is a road company Ann Coulter, who is a big admirer of his (despite Ms. (Mr.) Coulters' stated antipathy for gays).
SLC:

You need not be controlled by your fears.
You need not be controlled by your fears.
There would be little left without them.
McCain has a history in the music business. I actually thought the sketch of him singing Barbara Streisand was one of the most hilarious moments I've seen from any politician.
Re Ed Marshall and David Tomlin.
I fear no man.
the Chotiner article refers to the Drudge blog. Hardly a source that a liberal like Mr. Yglesias should be considering as reliable.
I confess that I have not clicked on it, but there would seem to be video. So it does not matter that Drudge is not reliable. Of course the independent fact that Drudge reported, that "Barbara Ann" is a Beach Boys song, is as I said above wrong.
As for the rest of your comment, SLC, you really are an asshole.
So it does not matter that Drudge is not reliable.
Guilt by association fallacies would be the remainder of SLC after you scratch paranoid fantasies.
This is the state of current US politics: Democratic candidates are trying to out-vanilla one another while the Republicans hold a batshit gibbering contest. Oh my.
Meanwhile, the "liberal" media bangs the war drums with gusto when it's not too busy wallowing in Anna Nicole's rotting rutbox or the tortured skull of violent sociopath. I love this country!
Let's just vote McCain and get it all over with. Who better to lead us to WWIII than a man whose soul died in Vietnam?
I prefer Ted Leo. Bomb. Repeat. Bomb.
going, going, gone.
bozo, the numb nuts candidate. let's hope this senile, trigger happly fool is nominated. he'd be a lot easier to deal with than romney.
Re Matt Weiner
Mr. Weiner breathes out but he doesn't breathe in.
Re Ed Marshall
I wouldn't believe Matt Drudge if he said that the sun was going to rise tomorrow. They don't call him Drudge the sludge for nothing.
Are you sure he wasn't siging "Whore, whore, whore, whore for AIPAC"?
I was talking to the Berkeley College Republicans today (all 3 of them!) and they seem to be quite keen on Romney as a legitimate "conservative" candidate. As one who lived through Romney for Chief Masshole, '02, I can say that this perspective is laughably delusional, if not insane. Romney blatantly proclaimed his moderate-ness throughout his MASS campaign, for obvious reasons, but now claims the mantle of chief Right Wing Firebreather. His record as Mass governor was decidedly erratic. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/25/AR2006112500736.html

Gregorio,
I thought the Berkeley College Republicans were the largest group on campus, and one of the larger College Republican clubs in the nation. At least they were when I attended Cal in the late 1990's.
"Re Ed Marshall and David Tomlin.

Then why haven't you stopped wetting the bed? OK, I'll talk to your dad about not telling you scary stories about the Ay-rabs anymore before bed.
They said there were 474 of them, then 496, but only three guys ever sit at that table or write for the CalPatriot magazine. "Beetle" is a self-proclaimed libertarian anyway.
There may be some passive young 'pubs who signed the mailing list, but they don't seem to do shit or cop to it in public. It's much more fun to watch the Bob Avak-olytes take on the ISO and the Berkeley Dems bash the Greens and vice versa. The fractious left on campus is unified by a lack of coherence and momentum. Meanwhile student fees are skyrocketing, BP's further greening the pool, and weapons production is resuming at Livermore. Nope, much more fun to rail about global revolution and Nancy Pelosi's neck wattles.
Berkeley is twice as apathetic as SF State, and worse than Harvard ever was. How the mighty have fallen. Too bad I have less depressing shit to do, like post on MY's blog!
The wingnuts will take their chances with Mr. Brill Cream. Romney will do a secret pinky swear with the hard core right promising that he really will pursue their ideology. I think he actually will, and that’s why he is so scary. There is nothing worse than a convert determined to demonstrate fidelity to the new found faith.
Gregorio,
Is the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) still on campus? Is the Cal Dems' newspaper still called "the Smart Ass?" Ah, the memories...
Yes and yes. Defending Affirmative is tough in the days after Uncle Ward; Berkeley is fast turning into a Vanilla Creme cookie; any chocolate (milk or dark) crumbs tend to find their way here by accident. Blowhards like Searle applaud the ostensible "meritocratic" demographics; I think it makes for a more boring, politically apathetic campus that is decidedly career-oriented and activism-shy— the only activists left are mostly shrill, out of touch zealots.
Nothing could make the Smart-Ass funny; compared to unintentionally hysterical Cal Patriot, the Ass reeks like donkey turds. I write for the Squelch!, which is like the Harvard Lampoon, but with jokes. The only political groups worth a damn are the ones that focus on something concrete, like ousting BP or ceasing weapons production @ Livermore. Most of the other groups tend to send mass emails and accost you with flyers on Sproul, or raise money for Obama and Clin-ton. Maybe I'll join ISO and finally live up to my revolutionary potential by loudly debating Neo-Trotskyism with an Avakian supporter for 45 minutes while Students for Justice in Palestine inch away from the BCR table. At least I'll feel involved.
Re Ed Marshall
A little off subject but the following link is to a statement by the former Hamas foreign minister. This demonstrates the futility of any negotiations with a Hamas led PA government.

'Former PA foreign minister Mahmoud A-Zahar of Hamas said Friday that recognizing Israel contradicts the Koran . . .'
Of course no Israeli leader has ever said a two-state solution would contradict Jewish holy writings.
If the US does attack Iran ( or when it does?) - does the world then find yet another intractable problem brought on by reason of US aggression, or do we rationalise that "it was necessary" then accept the manufactured explanations a la Iraq - after the fact - WMDs - nuclear weapons - a threat to world security and peace - removal of a leader who was a great and evil danger to the world ( yes – of whom do we speak?) ...and on and on and, and…trying to find the road map to Damascus ….when?
