Fuck Bill O'Reilly

In all seriousness, this Dutch television interview with Snoop Dogg is quite possibly the greatest thing I've ever seen.

I'm struck not only be the English language competence on display here, but by Dutch familiarity with the US cable television environment. Also note that, as is frequently the case with conservatives, Bill O'Reilly's support for the second amendment doesn't seem to extend to scary black men.

Off topic-

There is a great post on The Carpetbagger Report from a couple of days ago about the mainstream media's (specifically Time magazine's) ignoring the prosecutor purge scandal.

http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/10367.html

What explains the failure of the mainstream media to cover the purge scandal for so long, and so many other scandals? Do you think somebody just set up newspaper editors to cheat on their wives, and threatened to tell if the editors wouldn’t play ball when they come back some day and ask for something?

It wouldn’t be that hard to do, when you think about it. People wouldn’t talk about it.

Posted by: Swan on April 1, 2007 11:49 AM

This is great! Fascinating to see how American television, celebrity, and politics plays overseas.

Posted by: Chuck on April 1, 2007 11:50 AM

In O'Rielly's defense, he does state that Snoop shouldn't carry a gun because he's got a felony gun conviction on his record. Maybe he's thinking inside "Scary black men shouldn't have guns," but I'm inclined to agree that convicted felons shouldn't be allowed to get gun licenses. I think it's weird that they can't vote, though.

If you're allowed to attack anyone ad hominem, I guess it's Bill O'Rielly. It still makes me uncomfortable, though, like you're lowering yourself to his level.

Posted by: Tyler Simons on April 1, 2007 11:52 AM

It's a Dutch TV program done in English, with subtitles?

Fuck Bill O'Rielly. I'd be happy to lower myself to his level.

What SomeCallMeTim said. It would be hard for most people to lower themselves to O'Reilly's level.

Matt, as ever, you've hit the nail right on the head. This is the most able display of drollery and wit since Noel Coward. Billions of late Victorian dandies are put to shame even in their graves. "Suck my dick"--ho, ho, what a charming rogue.

A very astute bit of cultural criticism to add to your oeuvre--well done!

On a non-Snoop-related topic, where did the Iran blogging go?

MY gave the blow-by-blow on the Somalia-Ethiopia war, and then had a couple months where "imminent war with Iran" in every other post, and now that there's an actual crisis with Iran that may involve a war starting in less than a week, there's nothing.

Also note that, as is frequently the case with conservatives, Bill O'Reilly's support for the second amendment doesn't seem to extend to scary black men.

I think it's a matter of record that the often odious Bill O'Reilly supports gun control. On this issue, at least, he's not only correct, but he's far to the left of most "conservative" opinion.

I wish it were "frequently the case" that "conservative" opinion on the second amendment allowed for sensible measures designed to keep weaponry from the hands of "scary" people (i.e., criminals) of any race. But paranoia about the possibility that such measures might make buying a gun a bit more difficult than buying a new pair of shoes usually renders "conservatives" incapable of supporting even the most tepid curbs on America's laissez-faire firearms regime.

poor MY. I've never seen the whole gamut of social classes take offense to one person so frequently.

MY, you used to look for a blogname? You should have called yourself Kilgore Trout, after Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse V" character who had great ideas but people had trouble seeing past the conveyance of those ideas. People from Harvard attacked his sloppy grammar and people from public education denounced them as pedantic and others denounced them for one reason or another based on some technicality. Kilgore Trout was a meritorious mind in a pretentious world. That's MY. A Harvard-borne philosopher with a too-smart-by-half readership.

Posted by: Dan Kervick on April 1, 2007 02:02 PM

Indeed, that would be a fine-albeit-cynical technique for getting some support for common-sense gun legislation: paint pictures of scary negroes with guns for white folks.

Maybe play the oldoldold SNL Dick Gregory (?) skit about the convict getting released from 10 yrs of prison after being proved innocent. He's asked what he's gonna do first, and breaks into song, singing "I'm.... goo...nna... GetMeAGunAndShootAllTheWhiteysI seeeee!" ROFLMAO

Additionally, essentially the same tactic would work for increasing abortion support. Start passing around flyers with the "troubling" question "Do you want your daughter to have a black man's baby?".

I predict abortion would be off the table for republicans at that point.

Last I checked, Fox News was one of the few American TV channels that one can find in Europe (on Murdoch's satellite service, of course) so there is ample opportunity for the Dutch to be familiar with Bill O'Reilly.

Yeah Matt, don't you know Europeans get a lot of our crappy TV shows over there? They are also more likely to speak a language other than their native language (unlike us). I enjoyed the "Fuck Bill O'Reilly"; however, not so much referring like Noah says to his lawyer as "ridin' with her pimp". Just gotta love that misogyny!

I don't know if that's the greatest thing I've ever seen."

This is what President Bush referred to as the "soft bigotry of low expectations". If, say, Paul Krugman had been on Dutch TV and said, "Bill O'Reilly can suck my dick", I doubt Yglesias would be that impressed. Since Snoop Dog is a black man, his vulgar comments get elevated to a higher level of political discourse in Matthew Yglesias's mind.

Ah, it's too bad MY never went to a predominantly black high school. After getting his ass kicked a few times for no reason, he would have grown up to put his talent for rhetoric to better use.

Posted by: Fred on April 1, 2007 05:28 PM

Oh, fer cryin out loud, Snoop's remarks could have come directly from the script for Idiocracy. There is not a spec of wit, substance, or originality in "Fuck Bill O'Reilly!"; save for its object, it is straight off LGF. Yes, we've all felt the same way, and while there is nothing wrong, in most contexts, with saying it bluntly, there is also nothing praiseworthy about it. O'Reilly could without embarassment play this clip himself, as the Dogg is just confirming every bad stereotype the Bill promotes of young black men as stupid and uncivilized. Yes, the pimp remarks are even worse on their face, though I think there is a bit of irony there, at least. It is interesting the MY, who is always trying to hew to the center and glorify moderation for its own sake intellectually, responds emotionally to the crudest sort of adolescent rebellion.

Posted by: Martin Bento on April 1, 2007 05:29 PM

I just thought it was funny, some of you need to chill out. Snoop is just playing out his "act", with a little brutal honesty thrown in (rarely seen on television).

You're a fucking moron. That would be the greatest moment in television history. The only thing I can imagine that would be better would be if a reanimated Mother Theresa said, "O'Reilly can suck this," while grabbing her crotch.

Yup, seconded. Paul, if you're reading this (not unlikely) please go to Holland and make this dream come true. Hell, it doesn't even have to be Holland...

Posted by: Mike on April 1, 2007 06:05 PM

Jimm, I need to chill out? I'm not raising my digital voice, but I too will speak plainly and that includes calling stupidity what it is. Do you find it funny when the LGFers spew "Fuck Dean" or "Fuck Hillary". I'm not saying it's something to get upset about, but it is stupid, and if "Fuck Bill O'Reilly" strikes you are hilarious, I'd like to know why. Yes, I know it's an act and Snoop somewhat acknowledges this, hence the reference to irony, but it's still a stupid act.

Posted by: Martin Bento on April 1, 2007 06:21 PM

Have you people complaining about the vulgarness and "lack of substance" even watch the whole video, especially at the end? Snoop talks about how O'Reilly could ask him on his show for an interview but rather bash him from afar, which is turning around a common O'Reilly talking point (he's too afraid to come on with me!).

I think Snoop is great here exactly because he says O'Reilly can suck his dick, it refuses to play the opposite role in O'Reilly's pandering hand-wringing about "the children".

Posted by: Bucky Wunderlick on April 1, 2007 07:11 PM

Yes, I did watch the whole thing, right through to where Snoop invites O'Reilly to do the show in his hood, so he can beat him up. And I attacked Snoop not for vulgarity, but for stupidity. The Rude Pundit is vulgar, but he is not stupid. And how is Snoop not playing into O'Reilly's hands by acting childish.

There is nothing new about white people finding it hilarious when black people act stupid, even in finding a cathartic relief in the lack of inhibition that stupidity brings. It is the soul of minstrelsy.

Posted by: Martin Bento on April 1, 2007 07:41 PM

Just to correct a couple of the comments above:

Snoop says of his lawyer, 'She's riding FOR her pimp,' i.e. she's a prostitute suffering for her pimp's sake.

NOT 'she's riding WITH her pimp.'

I believe you are reading Snoop's behavior very differently than everyone else. No one else thinks it was stupid. Cf. the reaction to the Dixie Chicks, etc. It's important to sort out those one should engage and those one should dismiss. O'Reilly's the latter, and with that sort, slapping them (verbally) is as fit a thing as can be done.

Posted by: SomeCallMeTim on April 1, 2007 08:03 PM

I am once again struck by the inability of many Yglesias readers to detect and appreciate the use of irony.

A brief lesson: when a young whippersnapper declares that something is "awesome" or "the best thing ever," odds are high that the item in question is entertaining, but is probably crass and lowbrow, and is in all likelihood neither awe-inspiring nor, in fact, the best thing ever. Since there is no witty and urbane way to describe the deep philosophical or historical implications of a Snoop Dogg interview, the socially acceptable way to condone said interview is by using ironic detachment.

Posted by: LaFollette Progressive on April 1, 2007 08:29 PM

First of all, "So-and-so can suck my dick" is a stupid remark in any context (save perhaps where meant literally as a sexual invitation, but that's not what we're talking about here). It is stupid because it requires no thought to make it and it says nothing about the person to whom it is addressed. It is stupid regardless of context because it makes no reference to context. It is one of the mindless cliches of our culture. All it says is "I am hostile to this person" and "I don't mind being vulgar". It is also homophobic, but leave that aside, as it would still be stupid even if it were not.

O'Reilly clearly must be engaged because he is an opinion leader. I think Berube and the like are wrong that certain people should be ridiculed not debated. Ridicule and abuse only ring true for those who already agree with you. Berube, in any case, is relying on the scarce commodity of academic respectability for his position, which does not apply to the Dogg. Any neutral person looking at this will see O'Reilly say that Snoop should not, as a convicted felon, be carrying a gun in contradiction of the law. That is not stupid, and it is at least arguable. In response, Snoop says "suck my dick, oh, and the lawyer trying to actually debate is just my stupid bitch!" No one not already on Snoop's side will find that a convincing retort.

The left has spent decades dismissing not debating the likes of Robertson and Limbaugh; they are just so beneath us. Has it worked much?

Posted by: Martin Bento on April 1, 2007 08:40 PM

So Martin, if I invited you to suck my dick "literally as a sexual invitation," would you say no :( ? It kind of reminds me of that line from Apocalypse Now, "We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!"

Posted by: Reality Man on April 1, 2007 09:06 PM

RM, yes, but what is the point of your comment? Just so you can say "suck my dick" pretending that a caveat in my comment intended to set aside irrelevancies changes anything? I don't know why this reminds you of apocalypse now - I was quite explicit that I am not objecting to the vulgarity but to the stupidity. If you don't know the difference, well, that's pretty stupid.

Posted by: Martin Bento on April 1, 2007 09:12 PM

Shut the hell up. Totally unjustified. As Snoop would say...

Posted by: Jimm on April 1, 2007 09:15 PM

Actually, you can suck my dick is about a momentary act of sex. I will build snoop his own prison, O'Reilley's comment, is about assault and kidnappping. I notice there seems to be like protest from Martin Bento from that. It is too bad that Snoop didn't say, I would put O'Reilley in chains, build a place in which I could keep him for years and years, watch him wither and die. That would have been... PUNDITRY!

As for marijuana smoking being that disqualifying, perhaps O'Reilly should get to the bottom of Bush's no comment about his own drug use issues.

Posted by: roger on April 1, 2007 09:36 PM

No one here is defending O'Reilly, so there's no need to attack him. He's despicable; no dispute. "Suck my dick" used as a taunt is not actually about sex; it is just an insult devoid of content. If Snoop offered to build O'Reilly a prison and provided reasons, such as O'Reilly's support for the shredding of the Constitution, I would be praising Snoop now. But that's not what he did. I agree; too bad.

Posted by: Martin Bento on April 1, 2007 09:51 PM

LRP, Maybe, but the fact that so many in this thread seem to agree with Matt shows that the position can be taken sincerely among the crowd who hangs here. I've noticed also that Matt uses similar language on bands he likes and such, and I don't think that praise was ironic. It seems to be a mode used for something he wants to just praise without analysis. Perhaps, Matt could clarify this? Were you being ironic, Matt?

Jimm, "just shup up" is classic O'Reilly.

Bento-man, lighten up. It's just Snoop. When you take anything Snoop says way too seriously, you know you need to chill. Light up a joint or grab a cock and give it a good sucking. It'll make you feel better.

Posted by: Reality Man on April 2, 2007 01:33 AM

If Snoop is important to be worth praising, he is important enough to attack. Either is meaningless without the potential of the other. But I'm not attacking him. I said there was nothing wrong is saying "Fuck Bill O'Reilly" bluntly, but it is a stupid thing to say. No prob, everyone says stupid things sometimes, but when a bunch of people sit around slackjawed going "Whoa, he said 'O'Reilly, suck my dick'. That's the greatest thing I ever saw!", well, that's frankly fucking moronic and I see nothing wrong with saying so.

The reference to minstrelsy was bit much, because I don't think that's mostly what's going on here. In saying that, though, I was remembering that this is the same MY who said that it was an empirical fact that selective abortion of black babies would reduce the crime rate, which is even worse than the Bennett position he was defending. That was a racist position.

But for the most part, I think this is about our culture's love for stupid aggression and rudeness as especially "real" and worthy things. This is a lot of how we got the clowns we have. It is impossible to imagine Gore or Kerry telling anyone to suck their dicks. It is easy to see Bush doing so, and Cheney's "go fuck yourself" comment is cut from the same cloth. The media continually rode Gore and Kerry as being prissy, pretentious, verbose, intellectual, effete, not regular guys, a lot of which boils down to not being the kind of guys who would say "suck my dick" to someone. The fact that our culture sees this as a problem has a lot to do with our current state.

Meanwhile the rest of country's mid-sized cities are experiencing a boom in gun violence and homicides and the police in these cities are blaming...easy access to guns and the willingness to use them.
