I found this charming photo on NRO where they're apparently under the impression that France is a nation that's in love with headscarves. No, no, of course. They're just trying to say -- as they usually are -- that Democrats are traitors. Frankly, under the circumstances I don't think it even makes sense to bring up the fact that Laura Bush and Condoleezza Rice have, like Nancy Pelosi, tended to wear headscarves when appropriate. Pelosi's demonstration that she understands the concept of good manners stands on its own two feet. The true prize pig in this fiasco, however, is Professor Reynolds who offers up this absurd notion:
FEMINIST IN AMERICA, subservient in Syria.
Uh, huh. Since 9/11 we've seen an awful lot of bad faith efforts to deploy feminism on behalf of militarism, but this is new heights of absurdity. I think we can take it for granted that were Pelosi to start rudely thumbing her nose at traditional religious practices -- demanding a yarmulke on feminist grounds in some synagogue -- she'd get attacked for that, too. Are there any actual examples of Reynolds taking a feminist stance on anything for any reason other than to find a pretext for attacking liberals?

One good thing about diavlogging that young master Nick failed to take into account is that in live dialogue it's harder to wriggle away from stuff like this. By contrast, Instapundit can respond or not respond to your blog criticisms. All of which is to say: I WANT YGLESIAS VS. INSTAPUNDIT ON BLOGGINGHEADS!
I was a bit reluctant for a while to say it, but it seems pretty clear that a good portion of conservative bloggers really hate islam and muslims.
Agreeing with the point of this post completely, don't a lot of women in both Reform and Conservative synagogues wear yarmulkes these days? I thought it was mainly the Orthodox who would still frown on that...
This is a predictable criticism from the no-passport-having Right. If you visit a mosque, and you're a woman, you wear a headscarf. It has nothing to do with submission, it's just respecting local mores.
I stopped reading Instapundit about a year ago. He's just too stupid to tolerate sometimes.
When Bush and Co. travel to the Middle East, do they behave as local custom dictates? Sitting, for example, with their feet planted on the floor, not rudely exposing the soles of their feet to their hosts? Do they remove their shoes before entering a mosque? Do they refrain from eating or passing food with their left hands, which are considered to be unclean for obvious historical reasons?
Or, do they just macho it up, and tough cookies if the A-Rabs don't like it?
You better believe these oil patch boys know, and follow, the rules in Riyadh.
"Are there any actual examples of Reynolds taking a feminist stance on anything for any reason other than to find a pretext for attacking liberals?"
That's a really good question. I also wonder if he's ever taken an anti-torture position, or a pro-gay-rights position, without using it as a platform to attack liberals. You'll notice he'll always say "Unlike Oliver Willis, I'm anti-torture", rather than "Unlike George Bush..." or "Unlike Dick Cheney..." or "Unlike Alberto Gonzales...").
Althouse does the same thing. Then, they pretend that, since they agree with the left on so many positions, it must be the personal hatefulness of liberals that makes them targets of liberal attacks. Very irritating.
This visit was a singularly impressive moment for Pelosi on the world stage. It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest that she's being "subservient" as she negotiates with the leader of Syria and conveys peace overtures from the government of Israel.
Nancy Pelosi is an inspiration to literally millions of women and girls, and I doubt many of them are concerned about her headgear. It's solely an excuse for ankle-biters like Reynolds to take cheap shots.
Are there any actual examples of Reynolds taking a feminist stance on anything for any reason other than to find a pretext for attacking liberals?
Does this count? Nah, probably not.
Glenn Reynolds...Instadouchebag...is an intellectual phony, coward, and moron all rolled into one festering lump of self-congratulatory crap.
What about pictures of Bush in those crazy Chinese pajamas that visiting dignitaries have to wear?
I was Rhode Island in 2004 and some enterprising individuals had put up flyers all over with pictures of Bush holding hands with some Saudi.
How about those?
Pelosi is an inspiration to more than women and girls. She is on top of her game and outsmarting her opponents every day (and I do like to point that out to my first grader daughter: brains, not bluster). I knew the GOP was seriously misunderestimating her before and after the elections.
BTW, if you haven't seen these pictures of Pelosi and Bush, you have to check them out: http://bagnewsnotes.typepad.com/bagnews/2007/03/on_notice.html
My favorite comment at the New Editor site (to which Instahack links): "Ms. Pelosi is a politically correct, anti-feminist fraud."
Politically correct and anti-feminist. The stupidity of this is simply breathtaking.
In my judgment , Glenn Reynolds is deeply deceitful, even for a lawyer.
Years ago, he argued strongly against gun control, even though we lose over 10,000 dead every year to homicides. I happened to agree with him on Second Amendment rights. But it seems utterly deceitful to me that Reynolds would argue that US citizens need to possess firearms to forestall the possible rise of tyranny in the distant future --then turn around and support Bush while Bush creats a tyranny TODAY.
Bush scraps the 1000 year old right to habeas corpus, the right to trial by jury, and Gonzales claims the Executive can torture US citizens. Bush then goes on to scrap the Fourth Amendment with "national security letters" and a massive surveillance system to cover what we mail, email, speak and do.
Glenn lets it roll over him like a gentle summer breeze.
Glenn was in the forefront of those beating the drums for the unnecessary war on Iraq. A war which has cost us $300 Billion and will eventually cost us over $1 Trillion in long term care for crippled soldiers. Yet Glenn, in a dazzling display of two-faced hypocrisy, creates a faux "Porkbusters" campaign against wasteful government spending and loudly criticizes Congressmen who divert a $1 Million or so to their constituents.
In my opinion, Instapundit isn't a forum for discussion of the national interest -- it is instead designed for one-way broadcasting of emotional, misleading propaganda. It resembles the sound trucks of Nazi Germany. That's why it's so funny when Reynolds criticizes the Islamic Madrassas.
I've always wondered who pays for Instapundit's bandwidth.
Richard Mellon Scaife?
It would be interesting to peep into Glenn's TipJar.
I totally agree, Don. Hence the need for something like vlogging heads. Reynolds will never even address this stuff unless it's done in a face-to-face format.
News item:
Pelosi goes to Israel.
Pelosi goes to Syria, wears scarf (and Abaya?)
Supposedly too, Britain asked Syria to talk to Iran.
Coincidence:
Israel is rumored to be telling Syria they have no intention of attacking Syria.
Iran frees 15 British hostages.
Are there any actual examples of Reynolds taking a feminist stance on anything for any reason other than to find a pretext for attacking liberals?
It's just like the 'limousine liberal' charge. You mostly hear it from people who aren't any kind of liberal. See John Edwards' big house, etc.
so Pelosi wore a fucking headscarf. at least she wasn't taking a nice stroll through the gardens, holding hands and smooching with a Saudi Prince.
DHIMMITUDE!!!!!one11!!9/11!!!
Are there any actual examples of Reynolds taking a feminist stance on anything for any reason other than to find a pretext for attacking liberals?
No.
To state the obvious. This is just one more instance of the Rightwing beating a very dead tactical horse. The old "Liberals/Democrats are hypocritical elitists" meme.
Thus you have folks who never met a feminist who wasn't a "feminazi" and who squeal at the merest whiff of "political correctness", waxing wroth with righteous indignation when Pelosi violates their cartoon conception of an imaginary "feminist rule book."
Standby for further honking about the "hypocrisy" and "bankruptcy" of Feminism and Feminists if they fail to condemn, tar and feather Pelosi, before riding her out of town on a rail.
Pathetic beyond words.
"In my judgment, Glenn Reynolds is deeply deceitful, even for a lawyer."
As a lawyer, what I'm going to say say is not at all deceitful, but instead is completely sincere: Don, go pleasure yourself with a large banana.
Check Glenn Greenwald's post about Cliff May from a few days ago for a hilarious example of Reynolds's stupidity. I couldn't even believe how deluded Reynolds's response was.
That doesn't even look like a French beret.
That doesn't even look like a French beret.
Real berets are Basque.
Just sayin'.
Eskerrik asko.
Probably the best conservative critique of liberal/progressive ideas is that we don't give enough weight or consideration to social mores and norms. Of course, modern Republicans have dropped any real unifying ideology, so they are now incapable of launching such a critique.
Probably the best conservative critique of liberal/progressive ideas is that we don't give enough weight or consideration to social mores and norms.
Nah, that was never it. They just want liberals to defer to *their* (i.e. conservative Americans') mores and norms. Everyone else's -- meh.
"This is a predictable criticism from the no-passport-having Right. If you visit a mosque, and you're a woman, you wear a headscarf. It has nothing to do with submission, it's just respecting local mores."
Hell, when a friend of mine who had been in the Israeli army was planning on visiting Kashgar, she had to make sure to pack very modest clothing because she was planning on visiting mosques. When in Rome and all. It's amazing how conservatives can't master this.
"Probably the best conservative critique of liberal/progressive ideas is that we don't give enough weight or consideration to social mores and norms."
To a certain extent, constructivism and postmodernism are all about social mores and norms. Constructivists and postmodernists tend to be on the left, except for Fukuyama, who has been drifting left. It is liberals, after all, who emphasize social norms and mores like not torturing people and international law.
NIma, your restraint is uncalled for. Get a load of this blood libel that's been making the rounds.
Speaking of "when in Rome," my Jewish husband wore long pants when visiting the Vatican. I suppose that's because he's pussy whipped or goyim whipped or something?
And that's not fair to Reynolds. I'm sure he's stood up for women's free right to "choose" not to take well-paying jobs once they have children, to choose to take their husbands' names when they marry, etc. Whenever women are choosing to give up things a man would never be asked to give up, Reynolds is there, protecting their free choice! What a guy!
Here is Bush in pajamas:

I spent some time in Italy a few years back. I seem to recall that the Catholic churchs in Italy --especially southern Italy -- want tourists to dress conservatively when visiting.
But then, the National Review and right wing blogs have about as much respect for good manners, polite discourse, and culture as that held by the 1930s Brownshirts.
Though they were called 'kerchiefs' not headscarves, Pelosi actually looks really Italian, at least to me, though it's a traditional Italian American look and has been out of style for quite some time.
By the gods, the Ole Perfesser is a bloody asswipe. But I knew that already.
I'm confused about Matthew's conception of feminism. I guess I was under the impression that Matthew thought we are all obligated to take affirmative measures to fight the patriarchy - that is, we all should be doing all we can to destroy those patriarchical features of society that keep women down. On a personal level, then, women should not choose to stay at home rather than work (thus helping to break the glass ceiling). On a policy level, the US government ought to be challenging local mores, not submitting to them - e.g., in helping to draft the Iraqi constitution.
So I'm confused. Now a powerful person like Pelosi should, in fact, NOT be attacking the profoundly patriarchical society in the Middle East? Instead, she should just be submitting to local mores? Does that mean we should similarly be submitting to local mores in Iraq -- helping to implement patriarchical sharia law there because it is "bad manners" to attack the patriarchy while a guest in another country in the Middle East?
I don't think wearing a headscarf amounts to an acquiescence to patriarchal sharia law- I've met many women from the Islamic world who consider the headscarf to be a sign of respect and dignity. Of course, the treatment of women in certain Muslim nations is downright appalling but I doubt Professor Reynolds could really give a shit about that, either.
I've met many women from the Islamic world who consider the headscarf to be a sign of respect and dignity.
But that's of course because they've been socialized by their profoundly patriarchical society to think that.
"But that's of course because they've been socialized by their profoundly patriarchical society to think that."
And wearing a scarf commits one against this proposition, how? AI may embrace a profoundly distasteful version of prescriptive feminism, according to which doing anything that does NOT challenge patriarchy is regarded as morally wrong, but most sensible feminists are far more thoughtful than that.
Re "But that's of course because they've been socialized by their profoundly patriarchical society to think that "
------
As opposed to our enlightened society which supports a $10 Billion hardcore pornography industry which feeds upon thousands of young girls every month.
A society in which our major art form -- movies -- does not allow any actress to succeed unless she appears in the nude-- usually performing sex.
A society in which tens of millions of young mothers must ignore the tears of their young tottlers every morning and deposit their children into child care.
A society which says a mother's love and care for her child is worthless and must be sacrificed for an economic policy which makes the rich ever richer.
I'm not talking about unmarried mothers -- I'm talking about the millions of married blue collar mothers whose husbands can no longer earn enough to support a family.
Some Islamic countries to pursue repulsive treatment of women.
I'm not sure that the US government is in any position to cast stones.
But then it has always struck me as odd that a government which
deliberately burned hundreds of thousands of women and children alive in WWII -- via dispersed napalm drops/firestorms on German and Japanese cities as well as via the two atomic bombs -- should make such moralistic rants about "terrorism".
I think the brand of feminism that tries to tell women what choices to make is rather disfavored these days. I don't know if MY has written something in particular to make you think he feels this way, or if it's simply a strawman caricature you hold regarding feminists in general.
So I'm confused. Now a powerful person like Pelosi should, in fact, NOT be attacking the profoundly patriarchical society in the Middle East? Instead, she should just be submitting to local mores?
I dunno, Al. You tell us. Presumably the values that your parents raised you with indicate that you should follow patriarchal structures, right? And since you'd have no problem with your daughter acquiescing to local mores when visiting a place of worship (she's not a feminist, after all), then you'd have no problem with:
Does that mean we should similarly be submitting to local mores in Iraq -- helping to implement patriarchical sharia law there because it is "bad manners" to attack the patriarchy while a guest in another country in the Middle East?
this, I'm sure.
A strawman? From Al?
Wearing a headscarf in a mosque is like not eating a double bacon cheaseburger in a synagogue. Simply good manners.
If Nancy Pelosi did not want to offend patriarchal societies in the Middle East she would not have gone there at all. A woman doing high level diplomacy, challenge to the existing order. Headscarf in a mosque, just good manners.
Further proof that crazy right-wing people are really bad at Photoshop.
A woman doing high level diplomacy, challenge to the existing order. Headscarf in a mosque, just good manners.
Yeah, but ellenbrenna, as Victor Davis Hanson and Niall Ferguson will no doubt concur, what distinguishes free women in Western societies with post-Enlightenment feminist values from oppressed women in Muslim societies with primitive pre-Enlightenment patriarchal values isn't such piddling things as the right to voet, own property or hold political office. It's that oppressed Muslim women are all covered up so you can't see their legs, while free Western women look teh hott in thong bikinis.
Just when I think the right has a monopoly on batshit insanity, along comes a post like this:
As opposed to our enlightened society which supports a $10 Billion hardcore pornography industry which feeds upon thousands of young girls every month.
A society in which our major art form -- movies -- does not allow any actress to succeed unless she appears in the nude-- usually performing sex.
A society in which tens of millions of young mothers must ignore the tears of their young tottlers every morning and deposit their children into child care.
I believe the hardcore porn industry is exploitative and at times predatory, but "feeds upon?" Much anti-porn rhetoric wallows in the same pornographically hyperbolic imagery it condemns. And the second paragraph is just utter puritannical horse shit. Lindsay Lohan flashed her coochie at a nightclub, not on the silver screen. Julia Roberts never had to flash her knockers, though she did play a hooker with a heart of gold. I admit women are objectified and sexualized in our society, but to say they have to whore themselves to the top of the entertainment industry is ridiculous.
And I like your third paragraph, but misspelling the most pathos-laden word in your post really undermines your point.
Nice touch on the Hiroshima/Dresden references, but the Bush Administration's crimes are grave enough without invoking specters of war crimes from a half-century ago. Perhaps we should dig up FDR and Truman and give them a good spanking.
And I thought my posts were shrill and irrational.
Allow me to add to the shrill and irrationality by pointing out that there is no shortage of deeply depressed, drug-addicted prostitutes on America's streets.
Which should make us deeply skeptical that Iraqi cities were bombed into rubble in order to free Islamic women from oppression.
Allow me to point out that when Instapundit Glenn Reynolds wanted to proclaim the victory of American values in Afghanistan in Oct 24, 2003 , he did so by pointing to a photo of a woman from Afghanistan wearing a red bikini in the Miss Universe competition. See http://instapundit.com/archives/week_2003_10_19.php . Newsweek did the same but added a bunch
of moronic commentary -- see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3339571/
The deceitful sophists for the rich will grasp at any rationale to justify using our children's lives and our tax dollars to seize oil deposits for Houston. They focus on splitting the Democrats by using different lies to appeal to different factions within the Democratic party.
To one faction, the Iraq war is portrayed as protecting Israel.
The feminists and soccer moms are conned by being told that Bush's aggression -- which has resulted in the deaths of thousand of women -- is being waged to free Islamic women from oppression.
Right wing Neocons like Daniel Pipes and David Horowitz constantly try to demonize the Islamic people as a whole. What's sad is that they use the same propaganda techniques that the Nazis used to depict the Jews as subhuman.
Steve,
My impression is that Matthew takes the view because he favorably cites the various Linda Hirshman articles attacking "choice" feminism and promoting the type of feminism that I described above. It very difficult to search Yglesias content, given that it is strewn so widely over the 'Net, but you can see examples here and here. I can probably find other examples, but those I the ones I came up with in a 1-minute search.
Dawn— do you have to be so emotional?
There are choices and then there is power and oppurtunity. In our society you have more power, and more oppurtunity, if you have more money. If women want more money they need to become educated in different fields then the ones they currently dominate and work persistently through their lives.
To not lay out in the most clear language possible the consequences of choices does a great disservice to women and families.
In an ideal world (mine at least) health, safety and educational access would not be predicated on income but since we do not live in an ideal world women need to be aware of the consequences of their choices. Nothing is neutral, deciding to work part-time and raise children can have consequences for the women and her children in the future that are mixed and need to be weighed against each other.
Choosing to wear a headscarf or a hijab while getting an engineering degree is not a sign of oppression being bullied by your male relatives or neighbors into wearing said scarf, being banned from upper level education or discrimated against at work is oprression. Stop worrying about all too easily identifiable symbols and worry about the true definition of a woman's liberation: political power, freedom from violence and access to health care and education.
It's about human rights, not an episode of "What Not To Wear"
I'm pretty much non-religious, but it was my impression that catholic women attending formal services in an American Catholic church are supposed to or expected to cover their hair. At least the last wedding I attended at the cathedral, most of them were wearing little hats or scarves, particularly the older women in the crowd.
