You could write a column about Roger Simon too, I guess, about how it can be a bad and wicked thing to write a caclulated hit piece using a mass shooting tragegy as a pretext. Stupid too, I think, since he packs so many slams at Edwards into the thing that it is difficult to take seriously by the end. Even the $400 haircut gets to trot around the circuit in this dog and pony show.
I don't think people such as Simon can write one honest word about anyone in politics anymore. It's a trivial game to criticize somebody no matter what they do, and Simon makes it so transparent by the end that it is as if he is giving the readers a step-by-step do-it-yourself lesson. But that gives the joke away and ruins it. Swank Haircuts: if Edwards was thrifty then we would hear "Some people of middling and poor means gave to Edwards, and he can't even keep himself presentable? What does that say about the seriousness of his campaign? What does that say about the seriousness of his commitment to the poor widows and orphans the gave their last filthy pennies socked away for this rich man's insincere demagoguery?" If he paid for it himself we would hear about how filthy rich he was and obviously couldn't really relate to the poor masses that support him, and how his personal profligacy renders him unfit to manage the federal budget.
These guys' model is Beria "Give me a man and I will give you a case."
invoking God is fairly inclusive of many religions and is indicative of Edward's genuine faith.
And if i hear, one more goddamn time, about Edward's haircut my head will explode.
Look, if a professional athlete pays a masseuse $400 bucks an hour to rub him down after every goddamn game... is that a business expense or what?
Edwards is running for PRESIDENT. if having a competent hair guy clear his schedule for an afternoon and come out and give him a shampoo and a trim [ya f in homo fobes] so he can hit one more fundraiser, one more interview, one more goddamn cocktail party... ONCE! then your five dollar donation has been well f in spent.
Praying? At the Ryman Auditorium? The former Union Gospel Tabernacle and currently referred to as the "mother church of country music"?? A Christian prayer, there? In Nashville? With Vince Gill (husband of Amy Grant), Del McCoury and Chely Wright on stage?
Quelle horreur!!!
Maybe Politico should stick to dogging Edwards about his haicuts.
Eh. Simon's analysis is too cute by half. I don't care if it is a Democratic primary; this is America. You can't be too Christian, especially in Iowa or South Carolina. Edwards was never going bag NH and he's probably got Vegas--er--Nevada sewn up as well. If was Edwards, I'd Jesus-it-up, too.
I hope Guiliani gets the nomination because I would take great pleasure in utterly destroying him with a series of youtube broadcasts. Of course, why bother until he's the actual guy, if he becomes the actual guy? The guy is a scumbag and that can be very clearly and convincingly communicated through a short visual medium.
I think Simon was just trying to be cute and turn the tables, as Al alludes to. Many conservatives think their politicians have to tread oh so carefully and always mention all religions in their events, lest liberals rise up and denounce them as bigots. So in this victim-mentality, why should Dems get a free pass?
In truth, no one really cares, and this article will not matter precisely because of the reason the author wrote it. Politicians are much more vulnerable to attacks their reinforce the stereotype of them (too pretty, in this case) than ones that go against the grain (too Christian? Seriously?)
Is that the same Roger Simon that Instapundit links too all the time? If you read farther down he criticizes Edwards for being a squish on gun control. He's criticizing him from the left! I guess that makes Edwards a centrist.
Edwards use of Christian language at a memorial service with a Christian orientation is different from GWB's tendency to bring faith into all manner of justifications for his decisions (how the President does this, to say nothing of whether it is appropriate, is too complicated for a blog comment, I'll go into it sometime in the near future on my blog which everyone should make part of their regular reading). It's the trivial matter of a few words. Similarly, MY's advice to Kerry seems to have been more tactical than based on what he considered socially or politically appropriate.
I am very much not an Edwards supporter but, I found Dowd this week to be below the belt. So when I saw Simon's column I was furious.
I think this crap with our candidates is just too much when the same is not applied to the republicans.
Why is it always the democrats. But, also, never the main dem, Hillary. Notice how the press gives her a free pass. Yes, they did dirty to her all thru the 90s but, she is the one who stepped out to declare she wanted to be president. She put herself out there. She should have to be treated the same as Obama and Edwards who are always getting the treatment. Obama has made several policy speeches but, it is never talked about in order to promote their storyline that he is empty headed.
And Edwards is only in the press when they are laughing at his hair.
It's time for Hillary and the republican candidates to get the same treatment.
And time for them to stop nitpicking and lay off.
I was always struck by Tony Blair's comment when asked something about the Bible or God in an interview, he said, “In this government, we don't do God.” His statement could be taken a number of ways, but knowing Blair's convictions about God more closely, he meant to say that he won't use God as a political means – as a way of rallying up troops, or a way in which he can get more votes.
American politics is starkly different, and it's the church's fault as much as the politicians. Some pastors will make it a sin if you don't vote for the guy that is 'christian' (supposedly.) They're blind enough to believe that Bush REALLY IS Christian. I might consider Blair more Christian than Bush right now, to be honest.

Boy, I can't wait for that typo-free version of MY.com that The Atlantic has planned for us.
I thought it was going to be the other Roger Simon at first.
God, the Politico just sucks a big hairy nut, doesn't it?
I think he's mostly criticizing Edwards for being too calculated.
I'll use M.Y.'s word here.... lame.
Too Christian and too pretty and corrupt.
Shorter Simon: I hate John Edwards, now let me figure out why.
features, not bugs, pal.

what a sad, pathetic, little potato of a man.
edwards didn't blame the tragedy on guns.
edwards didn't grandstand in the midst of grief.

potato boy could use a $400 haircut.
Had Edwards included Muslims, Jews, Zoroastrians, Coptes, Budhists, etc... he would have been criticized too.
Thee Politico is one smelly piece of manure.

Politico is going to crash and burn, probably fairly soon. Simon isn't even the worst of them, and he's pretty bad.
At the very least, they should allow paragraph formatting in the comments.
Er, maybe you want to changethe link to this.
The only persons this news filters to are those who view through faith's prism.
Those who dont weight policy and content over style and form.
Win-win Edwards.
Wow - the Lakers of old would have trouble with the Suns of tonite. Impressive.
Das Phoenix Suns bist sehr gut, sehr ausgescheisnet!
Simon is right.
Policies and laws aren't important.
Haircuts are important.
Sheesh!
What were we thinkin'?
Jeebus. Doesn't Simon know that you are only allowed to accuse Republicans of being Christian bigots? Sheesh.
Interestingly, a few years ago, Yglesias was advocating that Kerry accuse Bush of being "too Christian".

Where's Petey, our local Politico fan? Isn't he going to explain why it's awesome despite/because of Simons' stupid hit on his boy Edwards?
