Quote of the Day

"But no international player has generated this much buzz at such a young age since Milicic in 2002." That's a shameless Chad Ford discussing DVK Joventut's Ricky Rubio.

Comments

Hey, Darko looked good in Orlando's loss tonight, as he has in the whole Detroit series thus far.

OK, fair enough, but have you seen the video of Ricky Rubio? The guy looks pretty legit. Search YouTube for him.

Posted by: too many steves on April 27, 2007 01:34 AM

DUde looks legit for sure. But Chad Ford is literally the only person on the planet who would consider this praise.

Posted by: Matthew Yglesias on April 27, 2007 02:07 AM

Chad Ford is the Ahmad Chalabi of international hoops.

Dang. I go to sleep when it is 30-13 PHX over the Lakers and I figure that series is over. Wake up and Kobe scored 45 and the Lakers won. Hmmmm. Damned time zones. What happened there?

Posted by: Al on April 27, 2007 09:13 AM

The comment is whack, but do NOT sleep on Ricky Rubio!

He is only 16 years old and already playing in the best league outside the NBA. Because of the new draft rules he'll be there for three years. He's 6'4" and unlike the AAU kids (cough, Sebastian Telfair, cough cough) he'll get good coaching, learn to handle his own money, and fill out BEFORE entering the NBA.

The kid is already averaging something like 4 steals a game off the bench! That is just plain sickness. If I could compare him to anyone it would probably be an evolutionary Ron Harper. Not Ron Harper with the Bulls, but Ron Harper with the Cavs/Clips plus he already shoots better than Harp did at any point in his career!

The Ricky Rubio hype is definitely not going away...

Posted by: Dan K on April 27, 2007 09:42 AM

What happened there?

Kwame fucking Brown happened! Actually, even more than that, Odom happened. But Brown was big, too.

Posted by: SomeCallMeTim on April 27, 2007 09:47 AM

Well, maybe if Ron Harper had crazy point guard skills. That's the most impressive thing about Rubio -- his passing. That and his D. He can't shoot worth a damn.

Posted by: too many steves on April 27, 2007 10:03 AM

Forget Chalabi, the passive voice makes this sound like Instapundit on hoops.

'Hype was generated'

Indeed, and mistakes were made, sir...

Posted by: Pooh on April 27, 2007 01:25 PM

two triple-doubles and a quadruple-double in the U16 championships. too legit.

It was the apotheosis of Kwame Brown. He is finally living up to his potential as the number one pick in the draft. I think we'll see big things from him from now on.

Bwahahahaha.

Sorry, I was in DC for the whole "Kwame" era and heard that every time he managed to hit double figures.

Posted by: Njorl on April 27, 2007 03:20 PM

Kwame is very frustrating to follow. He flashes some real potential from time to time with an impressive performance. Sometimes, this even lasts a few weeks. But there's something curious going on with that guy. Even when he is playing well, he doesn't quite look like a basketball player to me. There is a certain awkwardness or uncertainty to his motion and play that suggests that he doesn't really belong on the basketball court.

I know what you're saying. I'm not sure how much of that, recently, is due to (a) changed size, (b) injury, or (c) his unbelievable timidity with the ball. Sometimes he looks so fluid. Sometimes not. He's an unbelievable physical specimen, though. I keep thinking, "Isn't Amare supposed to be a big?"

Posted by: SomeCallMeTim on April 27, 2007 03:43 PM

Hearing Americans praise Euro 16 years olds, while bashing American high schoolers by making Telfair a representative sample is really too much. Apparently Americans need to be tamed by college, and learn some hard lessons in personal finance while Europeans can go pro at 14. Ever heard of Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Amare Stoudamire? I'm sure their lack of personal finance skills is killing their respective teams right now.

If you want to talk about Euro busts there's a long long list here:
