The capital of Mexico, Mexico City, has a great deal to offer the sightseer. An entire array of museums, interesting markets, and historical sites await the avid traveler. In fact, so many intriguing spots exist in Mexico City that you will either have to choose your destinations selectively or add a few days to your vacation.

The main square of Mexico City is known as the Plaza de la Constituciуn. One of the world’s largest public squares, the Plaza de la Constituciуn is often considered the center or heart of Mexico City for it is here that many of the city’s festivities take place.

For the religious, the Basilica de Guadalupe is a must see on the list. This hill, a much visited site, is the location where the virgin of Guadalupe made her presence known to Juan Diego. Additionally, the Metropolitan Cathedral is a great place to get a look at architecture from many years ago. Sadly, the cathedral is slowly sinking into the ground.

The lover of great art will appreciate the Palacio de Bellas Artes where many fine works are displayed. Another good choice for a visit is the Museo de Arte Moderno. This museum showcases the works of many fine artists. Many of the exhibits feature Mexican paintings or sculpture. Additionally, photography and lithography are featured in this fine museum of modern works.

Mexico City is home to more than one hundred museums, certainly too many to list here. However, if you only have time to visit one or two museums, perhaps you can visit the National Anthropology Museum, also known as the Museo Nacional de Antropologia. It showcases a large collection of some of the finest artifacts of the Mesoamerican world.

Another museum to consider is the Museo Nacional de Historia or the National Museum of History. Once the home of Maximilian, this castle features murals, impressive furnishings, and an excellent view.

Nature lovers will simply gape in awe at the amazing floating gardens, or chinampas originally created by the Aztecs. Located in Xochimilco, the floating gardens are a must see for anyone on a quest for romance.

At night, something is always going on and there’s always something for everyone. Variety is certainly part of the spice of Mexico City and the nightlife there is no different. Tourists and residents alike can enjoy the serenity of the Ballet, theater, or opera along with the energy found in the nightclubs and bars.

Shoppers will delight in the sheer variety of places to shop in Mexico City. From modern malls to outdoor markets, the possibilities are widespread and seemingly endless. Outdoor markets are popular on the weekends and can be found in various neighborhoods including San Angel and Tepoztlбn. For a trip to an upscale, classy mall, visit one of the following Plaza Polanco, Plaza Loreto, or Plaza Galerнas.
